Total Joint Center of New Jersey Receives Certification from the Joint Commission*

Dr. Alan S. Nasar, a board-certified orthopedic surgeon at ASOMI (Advanced Orthopedics and Sports Medicine Institute), Freehold, N.J., and medical director of The Total Joint Center, has announced that The Total Joint Center of New Jersey at CentraState Hospital has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval™  in the areas of knee and hip as part of the Joint Commission’s Disease-Specific Care Certification Program, and is in compliance with national standards.

The Joint Commission, known for its rigorous evaluations before it issues certifications and accreditation, only issues its approval for orthopedic joint replacement programs that have established a well-run disease-management program. The Total Joint Center of New Jersey is the only center in Monmouth County to achieve disease specific certification in joint replacement.

Dr. Nasar, who has been instrumental in developing and directing The Total oint Center of New Jersey, notes that he joined CentraState in 2006 with the mission to create a center of excellence in joint replacement. Having recently completed a fellowship in joint replacement surgery, Dr. Nasar traveled throughout the United States to learn from other major joint centers and hospitals.

With knowledge of best practices he gleaned from those experiences, Dr. Nasar worked with a team of professionals at CentraState Hospital, including Kim Kelly, RN, MS, NEA-BC**, vice president, clinical services; John T. Gribbin, FACHE**, president and chief executive officer; Richard Mackesy, vice president, strategic planning and business development; and Dana Higley, BSW**, patient coordinator  for The Total Joint Center of New Jersey at CentraState.  Together, this team worked with Dr. Nasar to plan, develop, and fine tune The Total Joint Center of New Jersey so that they could apply for JCAHO* accreditation.

Dr. Nasar said, “After five years of work, we have finally achieved our goal and are very proud of our accomplishment. We seek to continue the goals of quality improvement and excellence for the benefit of our patients and the community. Patients should not feel the need to travel to ‘name brand’ centers to get excellent care in joint replacement. We do that right here!”

Because this certification demonstrates that the Total Joint Center has achieved national standards for health care quality and safety, patients can rest assured that the Total Joint Center of New Jersey has achieved the highest certification possible in joint replacement and is dedicated to a process that improves quality and outcomes and decreases complications.

The Total Joint Center is made up of board-certified orthopedic surgeons, specially trained orthopedic nurses, patient care technicians, physical and occupational therapists, dieticians, social workers and case managers.

Dr. Nasar holds a degree in mechanical engineering from Cooper Union for the Advancement of Art and Science in New York City. He became interested in artificial joint design while receiving specialized training in biomechanics and biomaterials at Cooper Union. Dr. Nasar participated in an additional year of specialization in minimally invasive joint replacement surgery in Las Vegas, Nevada. He is particularly interested in advanced pain management techniques that, combined with minimally invasive surgery, can lead to less discomfort and a more rapid return to work and leisure activities.
