Gertner Mandel & Peslak Law Firm Named Corporate Chair of Walk to Cure Diabetes

Posted on August 29, 2011 By

What if you were a child who had to prick his fingers for blood six or more times a day to test his sugar?  What if you were on a daily, life-threatening roller coaster ride, trying to balance the highs and lows of your insulin doses with your food intake and activities? For more than three million children and adults with type 1 diabetes this is the constant, never-ending reality of their lives because their pancreas has suddenly stopped working.

Each year the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) encourages supporters to participate in Walk to Cure Diabetes, a fundraiser especially for those suffering from type 1 diabetes. The hope of JDRF is to raise enough money to fund research for an artificial pancreas.

Ross Gertner and his wife Lisa, whose son was diagnosed with Juvenile Diabetes at age nine, have been staunch supporters of Walk to Cure Diabetes for 14 years. Their son is now 24 years of age. Gertner says, “We have no diabetes in either  my family or my wife’s so it was a total shock when our son was diagnosed.  From an early age, he has had a lot to deal with.”

This year the law firm of Gertner Mandel & Peslak, with offices in Jackson and Wall townships, has been named the 2011 Corporate Chair of Walk to Cure Diabetes. Walk to Cure Diabetes, a 5K walk, will take place on Sunday, October 2, 2011, rain or shine, on the north end of boardwalk, Seaside Heights at Carteret Avenue. Registration begins at 9:00 a.m.; the walk starts at 10:00 a.m.

When Gertner first participated in the Ocean County Walk 14 years ago, only 50 walkers joined him. Last year there were more than 1,000; and with Ross Gertner as captain, the Gertner Mandel & Peslak team earned the title Top Corporate Fundraising Team by bringing in donations of $20 thousand. This year Gertner is hoping to raise $30 thousand.

To join the Gertner Mandel & Peslak “Walk Team,” or for more information about the JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes, contact Susan at 732-363-3333.

About Juvenile Diabetes: Juvenile Diabetes or type 1 diabetes is a difficult to control autoimmune disease in which the pancreas stops producing insulin, a hormone necessary to get energy from food. It lasts a lifetime and needs constant attention. People with type 1 diabetes rely on insulin to manage this disease, which still can result in kidney failure, blindness, heart disease, stroke, nerve damage, amputation, and pregnancy complications.

About Gertner Mandel & Peslak : Gertner Mandel & Peslak, with offices in Jackson and Wall townships, offers such legal services as real estate, mergers and acquisitions, commercial litigation, matrimonial law, land use and municipal law, homeowners association law, trusts and estates, corporate affairs,  intellectual property,  patents, trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets, unfair competition and related matters.
