Eatontown Couple and Business Owners Recognized for Philanthropy

Posted on June 4, 2013 By

Joel Markel, the founder and president of Preferred Home Health Care & Nursing Services (PHHC), Eatontown, and his wife Stephanie recently received a recognition award for their long-term commitment to the Homeless Health Initiative (HHI), a volunteer outreach program run by Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP).  PHHC provides home care for individuals in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

More than 20 years ago, the Markels sought medical care at CHOP for their son Ryan who later died of liver cancer and other complications. Out of their despair, the Markels decided to help others.  At the suggestion of Ryan’s doctors Mark Magnusson and Ken Ginsburg, the Markels created the Ryan Markel Memorial Fund, making a commitment to support a then fledgling program that brought volunteer CHOP medical personnel to a West Philadelphia homeless shelter to give children checkups.

Today, hundreds of HHI volunteers in many disciplines, including doctors, nurses, dentists, social workers, and specialists of all kinds, provide monthly free health and health-related services to children and their families in three emergency housing shelters. PHHC volunteers have formed a partnership with a homeless shelter and have become tutors and mentors. They also donated 30 air conditioners and a new basketball hoop and backboard during the 2012 summer heat wave.

The Markels were recognized at the Palomar Hotel, Philadelphia, during an evening devoted to Advances in Pediatric Medicine, a monthly series that raises awareness of CHOP programs, such as HHI.

Peter Grollman, vice president, Government Affairs and Community Relations at CHOP, praised the Markels’ long dedication to the program, the growth of their financial involvement, and their encouragement of PHHC employees to volunteer at the shelters.

“I feel like each time I contribute a dollar, I know it’s for the good of HHI,” Markel said, “and it continues to be a thank you to Mark Magnusson and Ken Ginsburg and CHOP for the help they provided my family when we really needed it.”

Ocean Health Initiatives (OHI) Earns National Recognition for Patient-Centered Care

Posted on May 31, 2013 By

The National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) announced that Ocean Health Initiatives (OHI), Lakewood, has achieved Level 3 Recognition at all three of its sites for Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH), a national program that uses evidence-based, patient-centered processes to focus on highly coordinated care and long-term participative relationships.

The patient-centered medical home is a model of care emphasizing care coordination and communication to transform primary care into “what patients want it to be,” often leading to higher quality and lower costs, and improvement in patients’ and providers’ reported experiences of care.

To receive Level 3 Recognition, which expires March 2016, OHI met key program components in the following areas: written standards for patient access and continuity of care; use of patient feedback materials; appropriate use of charting tools to track patients and organize clinical information; responsive care management techniques with an emphasis on preventive care for individual patients and for the entire patient population; adaptation to patient’s cultural and linguistic needs; use of information technology for prescriptions, test and referral tracking, and coordination with other health care providers; use of evidence-based guidelines to treat chronic conditions; and the measurement and reporting of clinical and service performance.

These key standards OHI met are aligned with the joint principles of the Patient-Centered Medical Home established with the American College of Physicians, the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the American Osteopathic Association.

NCQA President Margaret E. O’Kane said, “The patient-centered medical home raises the bar in defining high-quality care by emphasizing access, health information technology and partnerships between clinicians and patients. PCMH Recognition shows that OHI has the tools, systems, and resources to provide their patients with the right care at the right time.”

As part of Level 3 Recognition, NCQA will list OHI’s practices and clinicians on its website with a recognition seal for PCMH.  NCQA is a private, nonprofit organization dedicated to improving health care quality. NCQA’s Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS®) is the most widely used performance measurement tool in health care.

Reward and Retention – What Can HR Do? June 2013 Meeting of JSAHR

Posted on May 24, 2013 By

In the next ten years it will become increasingly harder for organizations to satisfactorily staff to meet the demands of the market. Money will only go so far in attracting and retaining talented staff. But there are a number of other steps we can take to keep our best employees, and most of them don’t cost a cent.

Ron Katz, an HR consultant and adjunct instructor at the Cornell University School of Industrial and Labor Relations, will outline proven techniques to reward and retain valued staff, five low and no-cost practices that can stem turnover and reward top performers on Thursday, June 13, 2013, at the monthly meeting of The Jersey Shore Association for Human Resources (JSAHR), a Silver Excel award winner of SHRM (Society for Human Resource Management), 8:00 to 10:00 a.m., Jumping Brook Country Club, 210 Jumping Brook Road, Neptune, N.J.

The registration fee, including a full buffet breakfast, is $30.00 for JSAHR members; $40.00 for nonmembers; $25.00 for those in-transition, and $10.00 for full-time students. This program is pending HRCI credits. To register, call Kathi Evans, JSAHR administrator, at 732-270-5204 email jsahr.shrm@gmail.com.

JSAHR is collecting items for residents of Moore, Oklahoma, in partnership with the North Carolina Coastal SHRM organization.  Attendees are encouraged to bring nonperishable food; baby items, such as food and diapers; store gift cards, or monetary donations to this meeting.

About Ron KatzRon Katz consults with HR staff and line managers in a variety of industries. He is the author of Someone’s Gonna Get Hired, It Might As Well Be You! A frequent speaker at HR conferences, Katz helps people see the value in working with people instead of simply managing them.

Katz is an adjunct instructor at the Cornell University School of Industrial and Labor Relations for whom he has designed and delivered numerous programs for more than 15 years. Since starting his own consulting firm, he has consulted with some of the largest organizations in the world on human resource and management development issues. He volunteers his services near his home in Westchester County, N.Y., leading a job support group for people who are unemployed, starting out, or starting over.
