MATCH MADNESS Challenge Launched — Turning 50 Is a Great Challenge for Monmouth Day Care Center

Posted on April 2, 2019 By

We all face challenges as we grow older. For Monmouth Day Care Center (MDCC), Red Bank, who celebrated its 50th this year, however, that has proved to be a good thing! Two River Community Bank, a long-time supporter of MDCC, donated $25,000 in honor of MDCC’s 50th anniversary milestone and has pledged to match every dollar donated this year up to $25,000.

In response to this challenge, MDCC has launched MATCH MADNESS and is asking the community to help support the Match Madness Challenge, which will help the Center continue to provide a safe and stimulating environment that can nurture and challenge the children intellectually, emotionally, socially, and physically.

The money raised by MATCH MADNESS will also provide scholarships and a sliding scale of fees for those families who are in need, pay for necessary building upgrades; and help stock classrooms with necessary learning supplies and tools. Make checks payable to Monmouth Day Care Center or MDCC and mail them to MDCC, 9 Drs. James Parker Blvd., Red Bank, NJ 07701. Write “Challenge” on check. Donations can also be made via credit card. Call 732.741.4313 or visit www.monmouthdaycarecenter1969.org and click on the Donate Button.

Heidi Zaentz, executive director of MDCC, said, “The Match Madness Challenge is a wonderful opportunity for Monmouth Day Care Center to continue its mission to help others. With the support of the community, we look forward to meeting this fabulous challenge.”

Monmouth Day Care Center serves families with diverse socio-economic backgrounds from more than 25 local communities. MDDC offers scholarships and fees on a sliding scale for families who qualify. Families who do not qualify for government support but cannot afford the full cost of care receive tuition assistance based on a sliding scale fee due to substantial community fundraising efforts of the Board. Call 732-741-4313 with questions or for more information.

About Monmouth Day Care Center: Monmouth Day Care Center, a nonprofit licensed by the State of New Jersey, is open from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., has eight classrooms; two playgrounds; a multi-purpose room that also serves as an indoor gym; a library; and provides breakfast, lunch and snacks. Mom and Sister of Special Needs Student Provide Insights into Developing Positive Relationships

Posted on March 30, 2019 By

Special education students, their parents, teachers and staff are faced with a delicate balance in communicating, relating to each other, and building relationships. Jo-Ann Turning*, Tinton Falls, whose son attends the Harbor School, Eatontown, one of three RKS Associates state-approved special education schools, and Anna Turning, sister of the student and a senior at St Rose High School, Belmar, recently presented “Strengthening Relationships Between Professionals and Parents” to more than 50 Harbor School staff members.

Erik Glazner, the RKS supervisor of instruction for the Alpha, Gateway, and Harbor Schools, said, “As professionals it is extremely important to exhibit good interpersonal skills, such as verbal communication, listening skills, and the basics of interactions among everyone so we can communicate and develop a level of trust with our families.”

During their talk, the Turnings stressed the importance of being responsive and having the right attitude. They asked attendees to just “Imagine you are me….” To that end, an on-going self-assessment is essential for everyone. Questions, such as do I exhibit warmth, strength; am I likable; trust-worthy; competent? will help build strong relationships and focus on the needs of parents and students.

Parents need to know that each professional knows their special needs student well. No one wants just another IEP (Individualized Education Program). What does this student do really well? Did this student do anything that surprised you or made you laugh? What makes this student happy most often during the school day?

Everyone seemed to agree that setting goals higher and acknowledging a student’s potential give parents hope.

The Harbor School; the Gateway School, Carteret; and the Alpha School, Jackson, provide education, therapeutic, and behavioral support for children who have challenges, such as multiple disabilities, cognitively impairments, autistic spectrum disorder, learning disabilities, traumatic brain injuries, behavioral disorders, or other health impairments.

For more information or information about school enrollment, contact Dana Giblin at 732-544-9394.                                                                                       *Jo-Ann Turning named her website “Bacon and Juice Boxes” after her son’s two favorite foods — Oscar Meyer bacon and Capri Sun juice boxes.

Israel Bonds Brunch to Honor Stephanie and Joel Markel

Posted on March 25, 2019 By

Israel Bonds of New Jersey will be honoring Stephanie and Joel Markel, Sunday April 7, 10:30 a.m. to Noon, at the Marlboro Jewish Center (MJC), 103 School Road West, Marlboro, NJ 07746.

Stephanie and Joel Markel, MJC members, are being recognized for their strong commitment as proud Jewish Americans. It was in the Flatbush Yeshiva, their high school in Brooklyn, that the Markels first developed their friendship and strong feelings for their Jewish heritage and the State of Israel.

Lily Markel, the family matriarch and a Hungarian survivor of Auschwitz, lost her entire family during the Holocaust. Her son Joel Markel honored the experience of his mother and the millions of victims of the Jewish genocide by becoming the founder and executive producer of Ottimo Films, a company that produced Oro Macht Frei (Gold Will Set You Free), a 70-minute documentary that tells the story of the Roman Jewish experience during the Nazi occupation of Rome, September 1943 through June 1944.

Stephanie Markel said, “Joel wanted to bring this story to an American audience because it enables us to understand the atrocity of the Holocaust in an intimate way, giving names and faces to the reality of the millions of people lost forever.”

Oro Macht Frei won Best International Documentary at the 13th annual Garden State Film Festival, Atlantic City.

Stephanie and Joel are well known for their humanitarian and philanthropic work throughout the area, including their ongoing support of the Emmanuel Cancer Foundation (ECF), which provides free specialized services to New Jersey families who are caring for a child with cancer. Joel has served as ECF’s president for several years in a row.

They have also made a long-term commitment to the Homeless Health Initiatives, a volunteer outreach program run by Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). PHHC provides medical personnel to a West Philadelphia homeless shelter to give children checkups, among other medical care.

Joel is currently a member of Brothers for Life whose mission is “injured soldiers helping injured soldiers.” He is a member of Chhange – Center for Holocaust, Human Rights & Genocide Education.

To register for the Israel Bonds Brunch, call 973-712-1407.
