Lakewood Public Works Announces New Days for Bulk and Trash Pickup, Starting Jan. 1
Mark your calendars for two important changes, starting January 1, 2018! First, your bulk trash pickup day is now Friday (not Wednesdays), every week according to your zone*. Bulk trash are items, such as brush, metal, leaves, e-waste, and sanitation bulk.
The second change: All normal trash (green can) and recycling (yellow can) pickups for Thursday and Friday will now be collected the day before. So if your normal pickup day was Thursday, it is now Wednesday. If your normal pickup day was Friday, it is now Thursday.
Very important reminders about bulk trash: All residents must call for an appointment to have their bulk trash picked up. Remember, bulk trash is only collected once a month in your zone so if a holiday occurs on your bulk trash pickup week, you will have to wait until the next month.
Be sure to separate metal, brush, electronics, and bulk trash, and neatly stack these items at your curbside so they do not wind up in the road or cause someone to fall on them. To reduce the risk of accidents, do not put out items scheduled for bulk pick earlier than the Wednesday before a scheduled pick up. Sorry, no construction or demolition materials will be picked up.
Besides calling for an appointment to pick up bulk trash, residents can also schedule a pickup at http://lakewood.mobile311.com, which they can save as an icon to make it an app. Although the application is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, the DPW is open Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., exclusive of holidays. All requests, however, will be viewed the next business day.

Zone 1 – Carey Street – 14th Street area
Zone 2 — Ridge Avenue, Ocean Avenue, Park Avenue
Zone 3 — New Central Avenue, Gudz Road, Miller Road

The Importance of Federally-Qualified Health Centers
Federally-Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) are facing a severe loss in funding. On September 30, 2017, the Community Health Centers Fund, which accounts for 70% of Federal Funding for our programs and services, will expire. This potential loss could greatly impact their ability to deliver critical services to the patient populations of not only New Jersey, but the nation.
As Board Chairwoman of the New Jersey Primary Care Association, which represents all 23 Health Centers throughout the state of New Jersey, and President and CEO of Ocean Health Initiatives, Inc. (OHI), an FQHC with nine locations in New Jersey, I am gravely concerned for the future of our health care institutions. We are looking for support to help educate Congress about this dire situation, assuring that Health Centers can overcome this potentially catastrophic funding loss and remain safety net providers for underinsured and uninsured Americans. We are all part of a mighty voice that can be generated with the aid of patients and supporters, pushing forward our message urging Congress and our leaders to fix this funding cliff before it is too late.
Currently, FQHCs service over 27 million Americans. In addition, FQHCs help to lower health care costs, create new job opportunities and help to reduce the need for hospital visits. Through this necessary funding, Health Centers are able to provide primary and preventative care services to the uninsured and underinsured populations of America. Without funding, FQHCs would not be able to administer vaccinations, provide dental care, or offer family care services from infancy through our patient’s senior years.
For FQHCs to remain operational and continue to grow, Congress must extend the Health Center Fund and more and keep current funding levels where they are; if not raise them. If this funding cliff is not addressed, Health Centers across the country are looking at their programs being reduced by potentially 70%. This would be a devastating hit to the communities that FQHCs serve and could dramatically impact the health of the large patient populations that benefit from Health Center services. This could include the closing of nearly 2,800 Health Center Locations and a loss of more than 50,000 jobs, leaving nearly 9 million patients without the access to the care they desperately need and are currently receiving for their primary care needs.
We implore our leaders to take this message into consideration and provide a solution for this funding cliff. The health of many vulnerable patient communities depends on it.

Lakewood Board of Education Presents Appreciation Awards
The Lakewood Board of Education and Superintendent Laura Winters honored Senator Robert Singer, Township officials, and Dr. Dovid Friedman, the CEO of CHEMED (Center for Health Education, Medicine and Dentistry), for their contributions in saving the sports programs for Lakewood public school boys and girls.
Though the efforts of Senator Singer, Mayor Ray Coles, Deputy Mayor Menashe Miller, and the Lakewood Township Committee, the sports programs that had been in danger of elimination because of a significant Board of Education budget shortfall, were saved.
Another problem loomed, however. The athletes needed physicals before they would be allowed to participate in any sports programs. It was Dr. Friedman, who without hesitation offered to provide physicals to all Lakewood athletes, free of charge, through CHEMED when he heard that no one was going to provide the physicals for them.
To date, 55 high school athletes need physicals and the Lakewood middle school still has to contact CHEMED to schedule theirs.
Dr. Friedman said, “The dedicated staff at CHEMED arranged to give physicals to all athletes so they can participate in sports on the very first day of school. This could not be done without the complete cooperation of our CHEMED staff and doctors, some of whom cut their vacations short to help. We see our role as being here to help the community. As soon as we heard that something needed to be done, we were happy to do it and service the needs of the community. At the end of the day, we are pleased to help the public school children.”
Dr. Michael Rush, a retired administrator, said, “It’s good that the town came together and does kindly things for kids because that’s what it’s about. With Dr. Friedman and all of us – we believe in the same thing: kids first.”
Senator Singer said, “When there’s a need in the community, I am proud to say that organizations like CHEMED step forward to meet those needs.”
Superintendent Winters presented plaques of appreciation to Senator Singer and to Dr. Friedman and all the CHEMED staff for their continued support, dedication and passion for all the children of Lakewood. “I thank you and CHEMED for providing the students in the Lakewood school district with free athletic physicals. Through your tireless efforts, the children in Lakewood are being offered the same opportunities as those students in neighboring districts and for that we thank you.”
