Local Company Turns 50!

Fifty years ago (1968), Tom Field, Jackson, N.J., began his business in a garage. Today Tomar* Industries, Freehold, owns a 40 thousand square-foot building, employs more than 30 full-time people, and has five trucks on the road. Tomar Industries, a distributor of packaging, janitorial and safety supplies, and equipment for businesses and institutions, recently celebrated its 50th year in business at Eagle Oaks Country Club, Farmingdale, with family, employees, vendors, and customers.

When Field first started in the industry, he worked for Tuck Tape, manufacturing many pressure sensitive tapes, such as filament, masking, cloth, and cellophane, among others. His last job for Tuck was to open distribution centers across the country to support local distributors. Soon he realized that he enjoyed being a distributor, not a manufacturer.

That was the beginning of Tomar Industries. “In starting this company,” Field said, “I thought I would be able to make recommendations to customers from a very professional point of view. Filament tape and uncoated cloth tape in narrow widths were the first items we sold for palletizing a company’s pallets and products.”

His first customer was a large food distribution company. Soon, however, he was selling thousands of packaging, janitorial, and safety supplies and services in the tristate area for warehouses, plants, and front offices.

Not too long after Tomar Industries began in a garage, Field moved into his first building in Spotswood, New Jersey. After Tomar Industries outgrew that building, he moved into a building in Marlboro. When Tomar Industries outgrew that building as well, Field constructed and established his company in the building Tomar Industries occupies today.

In 2000, Tom Field Sr. gave the reins of Tomar Industries to his son Thomas Field Jr., Freehold. As president of the family-owned Tomar Industries, Thomas Field is in charge of the daily operations of the company. Thomas Field, Jr., a graduate of St. Joseph’s High School, Metuchen, earned a B.A. in business administration from Seton Hall University, South Orange. In 1992, he started in the company as a sales rep.

Tom Field Sr. said, “I brought it to one level. He has certainly surpassed that and exceeded every thought that I’ve had since.  He’s a marvelous, marvelous administrator.”

Tomar Industries is a member of the International Sanitary Supplies Association (ISSA), National Paper Trade Association (NPTA), and The United Group (TUG), a national marketing and buying organization that supplies products and services to 450 members across the United States. Tom Field Sr. also serves as a fiduciary member on the TUG Board of Directors.
