Preferred Home Health Care & Nursing Services One of the 2016 Best Workplaces in Health Care

Posted on April 18, 2016 By

Eatontown, N.J. – Preferred Home Health Care & Nursing Services is one of the 2016 Best Workplaces in Health Care, according to the global research and consulting firm Great Place to Work® and Fortune Magazine.

Preferred, ranked Number Three (#3), is the only New Jersey company ranked among the top 10. Ranking was based on employees’ assessments of the pride they take in their jobs, the camaraderie they experience with coworkers, and the trust they feel toward Preferred’s leaders. Preferred also ranked as a best workplace for 2016 by Great Place to Work® and Fortune.

This year’s Best Workplaces in Health Care stand out for creating workplaces that employees say make them feel close to their coworkers and good about what they do. Those feelings come despite employees working in an industry under pressure to implement new regulations, curb rising costs, and absorb technology advances while also caring for patients.

“Employees at the Best Workplaces in Health Care are working in a family-like atmosphere where everyone’s got each other’s back and they’re working toward a common goal of taking care of people,” says Michael C. Bush, CEO of Great Place to Work®. “And the organizations that foster these inspiring, collegial cultures benefit by becoming talent magnets.”

The family feel creates a competitive advantage in recruiting and retaining employees at a time when many organizations in the industry can’t fill jobs fast enough. In 2015, voluntary turnover in health care organizations was 14.4 percent, according to CompData Surveys, but best health care workplaces are doing better at keeping workers, including in-demand positions such as nursing.

“At Preferred, we’re proud of how our employees work together to improve the health of people we serve, and how they support each other,” says Joel Markel, President and CEO of Preferred.

Health care institutions are hierarchical by nature, and work groups at some must compete against each other for limited resources. At the best workplaces, however, employees say they feel like a cohesive unit no matter what their job, and can count on coworkers to cooperate. The vast majority describe their workplaces are “friendly,” and feel like an equal member of the organization regardless of their position.

To create the list, Great Place to Work® surveyed close to 34,500 employees at 51 health care organizations, including hospital systems, home health care providers, national health care associations, and medical products distributors.

Preferred and the other winning companies were selected based on responses to Great Place to Work®’s Trust Index© employee assessment survey. Survey questions assessed co-workers’ feelings on camaraderie and pride on the job, as well as how they felt about other workplace issues including management, communication, work-life balance, and compensation.

The Best Workplaces in Health Care ranking is part of a series of rankings by Great Place to Work® and Fortune based upon employee survey feedback from Great Place to Work®-certified organizations. Visit https://clients.greatplacetowork.com/list-calendar for more information.

Career Fair at Lakewood High School a First-hand Learning Experience

Posted on April 13, 2016 By

Anyone who attended the Career Fair, hosted by Lakewood High School (LHS), and sponsored by Lakewood Chamber of Commerce this April was excited by what they saw and learned. About 260 high school juniors and seniors had an opportunity to talk directly to more than 40 business professionals and organizations.

The Career Fair was designed as an opportunity for employers to promote their business, find future employees, and provide students with information to prepare them for employment.

Lakewood Mayor Menashe Miller said, “I was so impressed with the Lakewood High School Career Fair, the caliber of students who were there, and the number of organizations and businesses that attended. A Career Fair like this one is extremely beneficial for students, and especially valuable as they think about the educational and skill requirements of possible career paths. Nothing could be more helpful than to speak to a person face-to-face.”

Lisa Gallicchio, director of community relations for Preferred Home Health Care & Nursing Services, Eatontown, and co-chairwoman of the Lakewood Chamber Scholarship Committee, said, “The business community welcomes the opportunity to bring new jobs to high school students as well expand their minds about potential career choices. The Lakewood Chamber is very proud to have had this collaborative effort between LHS and the business community.”

Gay Huggins-Dickey, the SLE (Structured Learning Experience) coordinator and PALS (Pupil Assisted Learning) educator at Lakewood High School, who coordinated the Career Fair with the Chamber and businesses, said, “Hosting a career or job fair gives students access to local company representatives. It is imperative for us – the community at-large – to do our part and make sure that we provide our students with alternate routes to success simply because college may not always be ‘the right now’ option.

“I also believe that we need to give students a little nudge to consider achievable, rewarding, ‘right now’ careers, such as police officers, state troopers, administrative assistants, shipping and receiving clerks, any branch of the U.S. military, electricians and plumbers, or customer service representatives.

“These students are our future and we must do all we can to invest in them now so they may become the productive citizens we will need tomorrow.”

Some of the Career Fair participants included Alcoeur Gardens, Aquatherm, Arbonne, Banquest Payment Systems, Bathgate, Wegener & Wolf, P.C., Blinds to Go, Concerned Citizens in Action, Costco, Dunkin Donuts, EEO Judiciary Office, Express Employment Professionals, Gaming Laboratories, Int’l., Gelbsteins Bakery, Herr’s Foods, Inc., Honda Universe, Ineqco International, LLC, Lakewood Fire Department, Lakewood Police Department, IBEW Local 400 JATC, N.J. State Police, Northern Ocean Habitat for Humanity, Ocean County College, Ocean County Library, Ocean County PIC, Ocean County Sheriff’s Department, OceanFirst Bank, Puerto Rican Congress, Preferred Home Health Care & Nursing Services, Santander Bank, Sodexo, Telesearch Staffing, The ARC of Ocean County, United States Air Force, United States Army National Guard, U.S. Coast Guard, United States Marines, United States Navy, Woodhaven Lumber & Millwork, Inc.

The Jewish Heritage Museum presents Documentary “Gellman American Dream” and a Talk about Creating Family Archives

Posted on April 12, 2016 By

The Jewish Heritage Museum of Monmouth County, (JHMOMC), 310 Mounts Corner Drive Freehold, N.J., will show the premier of “Gellman American Dream,” a documentary about the Gellman family created by New Jersey filmmaker Gary Gellman, on Sunday, May 15, 2016, at 3:00 p.m.

The recently produced documentary features the Gellman’s family, who have lived in New Jersey for 110 years. As Jewish immigrant farmers during the first half of the 20th century, they settled in Western Monmouth County and built a business supplying vegetables to the Garden State region.

According to Gary Gellman, a grandson, four generations of his family are still alive. His oldest living aunt, age 97, the only one of nine children still alive and a life-long resident of Monmouth County, hopes to attend the premier of the film.

Karin Levy Gellen, Boca Raton, Florida, who is co-author of “Yesterday,” a Gellman family historical book, will also be present among other guests.

After the premier of the film, Gellman will explain how families can create their own family history documentary. He will detail the entire process, provide guidance about the creation process, and describe how he collected all of the materials necessary to put together the documentary of his family from old family movies to newspaper articles.

“We recorded interviews with family members in their 80s and 90s, incorporated old film reels, photographs, media publications, and created a 30-minute piece that documents our family history,” said Gary Gellman. “Our Jewish history came alive as we produced this documentary and uncovered our fascinating past.” It is indeed remarkable what Jewish farmers needed to do to survive.

Gary Gellman, founder of Gellman Images, has been featured nationally more than 500 times in newspapers, magazines, and on radio, over the last twenty-seven years. This includes appearing nationally on CBS’s The Early Show, ABC’s Good Morning Las Vegas, CBS’s Early Show Indianapolis, Fox’s Good Day Philadelphia, Action News- Early Edition, NBC’s 10, and News 12’s Daytime Edition, to discuss the multi-media industry. He has been a featured speaker at conventions in Las Vegas, Philadelphia, and Atlantic City. Gellman completed his broadcasting and journalism studies at The College of New Jersey.

Reservations for the screening and talk are recommended. Admission is $8.00 for Museum members and $10.00 non-members. For more information or to make a non-refundable paid reservation, call the Museum at 732-252-6990 or visit www.jhmomc.org.

The Jewish Heritage Museum is located in the Mounts Corner Shopping Center, at 310 Mounts Corner Drive Freehold, NJ, at the corner of Route 537 and Wemrock Road. It is on the second floor of the historic Levi Solomon Barn. The JHMOMC is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization and is handicapped accessible.

It’s Personal! Goldenseal to Perform at VisionWalk on May 7

Posted on April 11, 2016 By

Goldenseal, a popular Jersey Shore band, will be the featured entertainment at the 3rd Annual New Jersey VisionWalk to fight blindness at Oak Ridge Park in Clark, N.J., on May 7. Hundreds of people touched by vision loss and their supporters are expected at the event, hosted by the Foundation Fighting Blindness. The goal is to raise $40,000 to support gene therapy, stem cell and pharmaceutical-based research that could save and restore sight.

Blinding retinal degenerative diseases affect more than 10 million Americans. The Foundation funds studies for preventions, treatments and cures which affect all races and ethnicities, young and old.

But for Goldenseal, which plans to perform about 50 concerts this year, VisionWalk is personal. Nicholas Martucci, 23, is related to a Goldenseal band member and suffers from retinitis pigmentosa, or RP. It’s an inherited disease caused by a group of genetic disorders that affect the retina’s ability to respond to light. It causes a slow loss of vision and eventually blindness. He was diagnosed at age 8. There is no cure.

“Goldenseal was asked to play by the father of Nick Martucci, our Number One fan,” explained Joseph G. Hughes, West Long Branch, the band’s founder and lead singer who plays rhythm guitar. Hughes, who is also a partner in the Red Bank law firm Zager Fuchs P.C., said five to 10 percent of Goldenseal’s shows each year are charity affairs.

“The guys in my band are really great,” Hughes said. “They all agreed to do shows like this and we see Nick at almost all of our shows. Events like these are good things to do in this world.”

Core band members include Jesse Kessler of Edison on bass, John Bongiovanni of Wallington on lead guitar, and Pat Martucci of Union on drums, whose cousin is Tom Martucci, Nick’s father.

Tom Martucci and his wife Anne Marie, Freehold, are this year’s co-chairmen for the walk in Oak Ridge Park. Their other children, Daniel and Alexa, also are involved.

People are invited to form teams or walk independently at the free, family-friendly event, which includes activities for children, a bounce house, refreshments, and Goldenseal. Since the VisionWalk began in 2006, tens of thousands have participated across the country to raise more than $39 million.

Goldenseal made its debut at VisionWalk last year. “It was a great event and so many people come out to support not just Nick but all the folks,” Hughes said. “It’s a feel-good event while having fun.

The radio station Magic 98.3 FM plans to broadcast live from the VisionWalk event and has promoted the event with public service announcements, Hughes said.

“Nick comes to more of our shows than anyone,” Hughes continued. “He’s losing his sight but his hearing is one of the senses he uses the most now. We really enjoy having him there.”

Tom Martucci drives his son to the concerts. He noted that besides RP, his son Nick has some learning disabilities. Making and keeping friends is difficult, he said. Hearing the band gets Nick out to socialize. “Even before Nick was the legal drinking age, we’d be at bars or wherever the band was playing,” Tom Martucci said, adding his son — whom he describes as a man of few words — did ask for a beer once he turned 21.

“If we’re not busy, we’re at a show. It’s become kind of a joke, and Joe always points Nick out as their best fan who’s been to 1,200 shows.”

On May 7, registration for VisionWalk starts at 9:00 a.m. and Goldenseal is scheduled to begin playing when the walk starts at 10:00 a.m. For more information or to register, call Elizabeth Roithmayr at 212-244-1470.

To participate, donate or support VisionWalk, visit www.FightBlindness.org/NewJerseyVisionWalk.

About Goldenseal:
Goldenseal (named after a native woodland plant with a bright yellow root used in herbal medicine and believed to boost immunity), is known for its original positive and uplifting music and has released three albums. The band’s repertoire includes Americana-based original patriotic rock tunes, including “Streets of America”; “This Is My Home” and “Rock This Place.” Hughes’ music has led to record label interest and a “Top Male Performer” nomination at the 2013 JAM (Jersey Acoustic Music).

Goldenseal has appeared with national acts, including Rick Springfield, Better than Ezra, Bobby Bandiera, Southside Johnny and Chris Barron of The Spin Doctors. Their style of music has been described as cutting edge pop/rock and roll.

Greater Media Radio Host Keith Roth Stars in Film

Posted on April 8, 2016 By

Greater Media Radio personality Keith Roth, host of WRAT-FM’s (95.9), Electric Ballroom for 18 years, is achieving recognition in another medium – film. Roth, a Tinton Falls resident, makes his screen debut as the star of William DeVizia’s feature film “Let Me Down Hard.”

The film, just awarded Best Homegrown Feature at The 2016 Garden State Music Festival in Atlantic City on April 2, 2016, follows the story of Jack Ainsley, a one-hit wonder as he returns home to Asbury Park with all of his other options exhausted.

Although the film is set in the music scene in Asbury Park and features such standout clubs as The Saint, The Stone Pony, The Wonder Bar, and The Brighton Bar in Long Branch, the focus of the film is about the choices we make in life, and where those choices take us.

According to DeVizia, his feature film was shot with no budget, over the course of five years in Asbury Park, New Jersey, and features a cast of all local, first time screen actors. “No actors or crew got paid, no locations got paid. It was a filmmaking exercise on what you can accomplish with talent, pooled resources, and good will.”

The soundtrack to the film features all local bands that can be heard on any given day at the Jersey Shore: Monster Magnet, The Ribeye Brothers, Acid, Mark Ribler, and F3K, whose front man Keith Roth is also currently a DJ on SIRIUS XM Radio’s Hair Nation & Ozzie’s Boneyard.

“Let Me Down Hard” is being shown this weekend at the Asbury Park Film Festival.

Keith Roth hosts The Electric Ballroom every Sunday Night from 8:00 to 10:00 p.m. on 95.9 The WRAT. The “Electric Ballroom” features the glam-rock days of the 70s and 80s with Rock ‘n Rolls’ greatest artists. Roth has done interviews with Rob Zombie, John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin, David Johansen, John Entwhistle of The Who and Joey Ramone, among others.
