2016 Smiles for Life Begins – Local Dentist Donates Fees to Help Children
If you whiten your teeth between now and June 30, you will be helping families whose children have cancer or children who need cleft palate surgery. Each year Toms River dentist Dr. Ron Rotem participates in the Smiles for Life Campaign by donating 100 percent of his time whitening teeth.
Last year, Dr. Rotem donated $1,800 from the Smiles for Life Campaign to Ocean of Love, a nonprofit organization that aids families whose children have cancer, and The Smile Train, which provides surgery for children who need cleft palate surgery. Through the national Smiles for Life Campaign, Dr. Rotem has donated more than $55,000.00 during the past 12 years to charities.
Dr. Rotem, a member of the national Crown Council, says, “If you are planning to professionally whiten your teeth, why not take this opportunity to help a child.”
To contribute to the 2016 Smiles for Life Campaign, call Rotem Dental Care to reserve a date for whitening (732–341–8500). Dr. Rotem will donate 100 percent of the cost of materials and his time for the whitening, which will directly benefit Ocean of Love and The Smile Train.

Dress, Drain and Defend–The Three D’s to Fight Mosquitoes
Although the Zika virus has made its way into the United States in recent months through infected travelers, Marsha Luna-Grover, owner of The Mosquito Authority, a licensed, mosquito-repellant business in Brick, is suggesting people can take common sense steps to avoid contact with the very insects that carry the disease – mosquitoes.
Luna-Grover says, “Following the three D’s – Dress, Drain and Defend – can help minimize contact with mosquitoes and the diseases they carry. If we can help contribute to reducing the overall mosquito population, we as a community are doing our part.”
Dress: wear long sleeves and pants.
Drain: when possible, drain anything that may gather water. As the weather gets warmer, be conscious of standing water on your property from melting snow or excessive rain. Mosquitoes breed in standing water, so turn over any items that might collect water, dispose of any unused clutter, clean up leaf debris and clogged gutters, and drill holes in containers that do not have a lid.
Defend: use approved repellents to protect against mosquito bites.
Some additional advice Luna-Grover offers clients is to keep shrubs trimmed and grass cut short to eliminate some of the shady areas where mosquitoes like to rest. Make sure the box for the sprinkling system is closed and no water has pooled in it. Shake out any gutter extensions and change bird bath water weekly. Luna-Grover also advises spraying yards professionally every 21 days, the average lifespan of a mosquito, to help maintain control of the mosquito population.
The Mosquito Authority is a private company that provides mosquito-repellent services throughout Ocean and Monmouth counties. The company identifies trouble areas and sprays so people can maximize their time with family and friends in outdoor living spaces.
The Mosquito Authority’s technicians spray a mild solution that poses no threat to children or pets. Should mosquitoes still be a problem, the technicians will re-inspect the property; and, if necessary, reapply the solution, free of charge. The company has a 100 percent satisfaction guarantee.
Zika is carried through the bite of the Aedes aegypti mosquito, most commonly found in tropical countries. A person infected with a mosquito-borne disease can carry it to a different country where it can spread if they are bitten by a local mosquito. Although scientists for now are unsure if mosquitoes suited to New Jersey’s climate will be able to spread the disease, controlling mosquito populations and taking sensible precautions are still key.
Luna-Grover says, “While Zika should be taken seriously, do not panic. Seek out accurate, up-to-date information about the disease. A lot about Zika is still unknown, and there is more to be learned about it each day. Avoid misinformation circulating about Zika and instead get information from trusted sources, such as the CDC (Center for Disease Control) and WHO.”
Luna-Grover, a Brick resident and former retail manager, launched Franchise #1198 of The Mosquito Authority in Brick because she is allergic to mosquitoes and was desperate to find a way to be able to enjoy the outdoors. “I came across a company that offered a service I didn’t even know about,” she said.
Luna-Grover holds a B.S. in business management from Kean University and a New Jersey pesticide license. The Mosquito Authority has franchises in 33 states.

About Padraig Allen: McLean Avenue Band is led by singer/songwriter Padraig Allen, who was born and raised in an urban village named Mount Temple, outside the town of Athlone, in County Westmeath, Ireland, where the Shannon waters flow. Padraig comes from a long line of successful Irish traditional/country musicians and singers. His uncle Tony Allen from the famous “Foster & Allen” was mainly responsible for kick starting his career, engaging Padraig to tour with the band. In 1993, one of Padraig’s first performances was on a show called “Big Top” on the Irish TV network “RTE.” In 1999, he landed on American shores with the popular Irish Band “The Whole Shabang” as lead singer and bass player. Currently Allen has been touring the U.S. and internationally with McLean Avenue. Their album, Easy & Free received critical praise and radio airplay. A Christmas song Christmas on McLean was played on many radio stations. WFUV regularly reports the band as being one of their favorite bands on the scene. Allen notes, “My love for America and my own country, Ireland, leaves me singing “God Bless America and God Save Ireland.”
About Joanna Barry Connolly: Emerald Fire is led by director/choreographer Joanna Barry Connolly. Dublin born, Joanna began her performing arts training at the age of three. The daughter of a rock singer and a professional dancer, she studied a full range of dance styles, including ballet, jazz, modern and tap; however, it was traditional Irish dance that became her passion at a young age, both as a performer and choreographer. Her long running career as a professional dancer has led her on tour from Ireland to Europe, Japan and the U.S., from The O2 Theatre in Dublin to Carnegie Hall, N.Y.C. and TV appearances on RTE (Ireland), NBC “Today Show,” Fox NY, and PBS. From its debut in Austria in 2001, at Landeck Concert Hall and the Vienna Music Festival to shows at Mohegan Sun and N.Y.C.’s Battery Park, “Emerald Fire” has been treating audiences to their unique ability to introduce jazz, ballet, tap and even hip hop into their dynamic, multi-faceted, diverse and hugely entertaining Irish dance performances.
Padraig and Joanna’s collaborations began with The Whole Shebang. The groups were commissioned to perform together and audiences responded superbly. Given their backgrounds and their mutual desire to bring other ethnic influences to their shows, Padraig and Joanna felt they were a perfect production partnership. McLean Avenue Band and Emerald Fire complement each other in every aspect and proudly represent their Irish heritage with shows that have been selling out theatres throughout the East Coast. “A thoroughly entertaining variety show.”- The Irish Voice
