Posted on October 27, 2015 By

The March of Dimes has nominated Esther Wentz, RN, Williamstown, N.J., Nurse of the Year. Wentz is a nurse in the Mount Laurel, N.J., branch of Preferred Home Health Care & Nursing Services (PHHC), Eatontown, with offices throughout New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

The 10th annual Nurse of the Year, a state-wide event, recognizes and honors nursing excellence and achievements in 19 health care categories. The March of Dimes nominated Wentz, a registered nurse with 19 years of experience, a most outstanding nurse in the category of hospice, home health, palliative care, and long term acute care.

Wentz, the mother of a child with special needs, devotes her free time volunteering at Impacting Your World Christian Center, working in a soup kitchen, and volunteering at a walk-a-thon, among other charitable causes. Recently, the city of Trenton Police Department awarded Wentz with a Certificate of Commendation in recognition of her outstanding superior service.

Until paramedics arrived, Wentz performed CPR on a pedestrian who had collapsed in the street and was in cardiac arrest. He survived his medical emergency, thanks to Wentz’s heroic efforts.

Wentz, who attended Temple University, graduated from Penn State, Abington, Pennsylvania, with an A.A. in Arts and Science. She received her R.N. from Frankford Hospital School of Nursing, Philadelphia, in 1999 and worked in the home care industry and hospitals until 2013 when she joined PHHC in Mount Laurel.

Colleagues said, “Esther has a heart of gold,” and “I hope to be the nurse that she is.” Ann LaPatta, Wentz’s nursing supervisor, said, “Esther is always professional when interacting with staff. She is never too busy to assist while also ensuring the nurses are properly educated, trained and prepared to provide the best care possible to our clients. We could not ask for a better clinical leader.”

The award ceremony will feature a silent auction and a dinner on November 18, 2015, beginning at 6:00 p.m., Pines Manor, 2085 Lincoln Highway, Edison, New Jersey.

Girl Scout Troop 483 Recipients of Prize in Compassionate Toms River Contest

Posted on October 26, 2015 By

Of the 500 art boards depicting what the word compassion means to area children ages 7 through 14, an art project created by a Toms River Girl Scout earned her troop a $1000 from Rotem Dental Care in the Compassionate Toms River art project, initiated by Dr. Ron Rotem, 355 Lakehurst Road, Toms River.

Nine-year-old Nikolette Lebright, Toms River, depicted her idea of compassion as part of her Girl Scout troop’s project. Leader Jenn Ciarvino and Assistant Leader Michele Thomas said after they heard about the Compassion Toms River contest, they introduced the idea to the troop at a meeting. The scouts were enthusiastic about participating.

The troop, made up of nine and ten year olds, meets at Hooper Ave Elementary, Toms River, every other Monday. They will use the prize money to make donations and to pay for such troop trips as Disney on Ice, Sleepover in Discovery Museum, and camping trips. The Girls Scouts also participate in volunteer work, such as the Salvation Army, Relay for Life, Foodbank donations, and planting flowers at local schools.

Dr. Rotem organized and founded the Compassionate Toms River movement as part of the Charter for Compassion, a drive that is striving to activate the Golden Rule around the world. Dr. Rotem said, “Compassionate Toms River is a cooperative effort to restore not only compassionate thinking; but, more importantly, compassionate action, which many feel is the center of religious, moral and political life.”

Comcast Spotlight, the first partner of compassionate Toms River, donated more than 500 canvas art boards (9×12). Recently the Ocean County YMCA, 1088 W. Whitty Road, Toms River, displayed all the art boards throughout the building and invited viewers to vote for their favorites. Based on the People’s Choice votes, 130 art boards were displayed at the Grunin Center, Building #12, Ocean County College, 1 College Drive, Toms River, N.J.
