Assemblyman Kean Proposes Secure Schools for All Children Act
How much would you pay to make sure children are safe in school? Assemblymen Sean T. Kean (District 30) is sponsoring “Secure Schools for All Children Act” (A-4288), a bill that provides $25.00 per pupil to help ensure security measures for nonpublic school children.
Public school students already receive about $75.00 per pupil for security aid, with an additional amount for the number of low income students enrolled in school.
Because of recent national incidents, all schools have been focusing on increased prevention and preparedness. The money allocated for The Secure Schools for All Children Act would be used to provide security services, equipment, and technology to help ensure a safe and secure school environment for nonpublic school children.
Assemblyman Kean feels it is equally important that nonpublic schools also receive funding to provide for student safety and security measures. “With new school security procedures and advances in technology, we can provide increased protection that includes all our children.”
Because Lakewood is not classified as an Abbott school district, Lakewood does not receive as much funding as the Abbotts. Many Lakewood residents feel the school district has been short-changed in terms of education funding.
Assemblyman Gary Schaer (D) and Assemblyman Sean Kean (R) are the prime sponsors of A-4288, which has bipartisan support.
About Assemblyman Sean T. Kean: Assemblyman Kean is serving his second tenure in the New Jersey General Assembly. He served from October 2002 when he was chosen to fill a vacancy to January 2008 when he started a four-year term in the State Senate. Following redistricting in 2011, he returned to the General Assembly on January 10, 2012. Assemblyman Kean served on the Monmouth County Environmental Council from 1999-2001. He previously served on the Wall Township Planning Board and is a member of the Friendly Sons of the Shillelagh of the Jersey Shore.
Legislation: Assemblyman Kean has sponsored legislation to mandate that carbon monoxide sensors be installed in all residences. He also sponsored legislation requiring zero emission vehicle technology be made available in the state, and a bill to increase penalties for persons convicted of kidnapping a child under the age of 16. He also authored the law creating the Gold Star license plates for family members of fallen soldiers. In addition, he sponsored legislation that revised alimony laws by providing grounds for modification and termination when the alimony payer retires, loses a job, or when the alimony recipient cohabitates with another person.
Assemblyman Kean, born May 21, 1963, grew up in Deal, N.J. He is a graduate of Red Bank Catholic High School. He graduated from Seton Hall University in 1988, received a master’s degree from Columbia University, and earned a law degree from Seton Hall University Law School. He has a private law practice. He resides in Wall Township with his wife Bridget, and three children.
Atlantic City Ballet Returns to the Strand Theater with Carmen
After a two year absence, the Atlantic City Ballet is returning to The Strand Theater, 400 Clifton Avenue, Lakewood, N.J., with its sexy performance of Bizet’s Carmen on Saturday, April 25 at 7:00 p.m. The Strand Theater has hosted the ballet in the past with performances of Dracula and Nutcracker and the original premier of Carmen.
“We were disappointed that these last two years, we could not include The Strand in our touring dates,” said Phyllis Papa, artistic director of the Atlantic City Ballet, “but we are so excited to be back and to have the opportunity to build an audience in this area of the state.”
The ballet is planning to perform at the Strand at least three times during its season. In September, they will bring Ballet Goes Broadway; December will bring back The Nutcracker; and in March they will perform Visions.
“We are always excited to present at The Strand. It’s such a majestic theater and it really showcases the company. All of our ballets look beautiful on that stage.” remarked Papa.

Founded in 1982, by International Ballerina Phyllis Papa, the Atlantic City Ballet is made up of professional dancers from around the world, who have earned national acclaim for their technical expertise and exuberant stage presence. Although their home base is in Historic Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, the Ballet has performed in theaters all along the East coast.
Their repertoire of original works includes such classics as A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake. Papa, however, is most known for her innovative works, such as Dracula, Caught Up in The Swing and her full length Carmen. Since its inception, the Atlantic City Ballet has served as one of the cultural treasures of New Jersey and continues a tradition of dance excellence for future generations of ballet audiences.
