Today the Strand Theater is considered an anchor in the downtown for creating economic growth, providing incentives for job creation, and attracting pedestrian traffic. The Strand offers year-round entertainment in plush, air-conditioned surroundings. It is a perfect venue to showcase comedians, musicals, dinner theater, stars from television and movies, and legendary musical entertainers. OHI Reaches an Important Milestone This August

Posted on September 7, 2012 By

This August OHI (Ocean Health Initiatives), an FQHC with sites in Lakewood, Toms River, and Manahawkin, reached a significant milestone: the registration of its 100,000 unique patient.

Along with that milestone, OHI is pleased to have expanded its health care services in innovative ways to the underserved populations of Ocean County. For example, This March, OHI launched the Patient Portal, an online website that gives patients easy access to their medical information from any Internet connection, such as one’s home, the library, or phone; and an updated OHI website (www.ohinj.org).

Recently OHI introduced two cost-saving programs: a discount prescription drug program at participating pharmacies and a discounted lab pricing program in association with LabCorp.

This past May, OHI began a free chronic disease self-management program developed by Stanford University, called, “Take Control of Your Health.” The workshop offers patients six 2.5 hours weekly sessions during which patients learn innovative techniques and strategies for better health management of such chronic conditions as asthma, hypertension, and diabetes.

Dr. Theresa Berger, CEO of OHI, said, “Ocean Health Initiatives has been a proud provider of health care to the residents of Ocean County going on almost 10 years. We never imagined our expansion would be this great in so short a time. We are honored to have been able to help so many residents and hope to continue to meet that need in the years to come.”

About OHI:  OHI, located at 101 Second Street, Lakewood; 301 Lakehurst Road, Toms River; and 333 Haywood Road, Manahawkin, provides comprehensive preventative and primary care, including pediatrics, maternal and child health, prenatal, WIC, universal immunizations, and dental health to the area’s uninsured, underinsured, and undocumented residents on a sliding-fee scale, based on an individual’s or family’s ability to pay.

First Student Chapter of JSAHR to Be Recognized at HR Meeting

Posted on September 6, 2012 By

Members of Monmouth University Student Chapter #5691 of JSAHR (Jersey Shore Association of Human Resources) will be officially recognized at the September 13, 2012, meeting of Jersey Shore Association for Human Resources (JSAHR), 8:00 to 10:30 a.m., Jumping Brook Country Club, 210 Jumping Brook Road, Neptune, N.J.

The Monmouth University Chapter is the first SHRM (Society for Human Resource Management) student HR chapter in either Ocean or Monmouth counties, the result of a six-year effort of JSAHR members and its College Relations Chairwoman Liesl Gabeau, HR manager, Zebra Pen Corporation, Edison.

Students in the JSAHR Student Chapter will learn about human resources and related business topics, gain experience through networking opportunities, attend business-related workshops, have a chance to participate in the National SHRM Student Organization at which they can network with other students from all over the country, find out about potential internships, and receive coaching and mentoring from the JSAHR leadership student director and volunteers, among many other advantages.

Carolyn Broderick, president of JSAHR and member of the Diversity department at Prudential, said, “The human resources professional has a very complicated and complex position in today’s workforce.  We are delighted that Monmouth University has started a student chapter that focuses on human resources.  The involvement of students in JSAHR will certainly benefit them throughout their entire careers in business regardless of the industries they work in.”

The Monmouth University Student Chapter of JSAHR is an outgrowth of the Student Career Mentoring Program at Monmouth University, which provides an opportunity for students to network with and to obtain professional career advice from an expanding group of alumni and friends of Monmouth University.

In 2001, Karl Gordinier, SHRM, who had retired as VP of Human Resources at IFF (International Flavors & Fragrances Inc., New York), began serving as a consultant in Career Services at the behest of Paul Gaffney, the now retired president of Monmouth University.

Gordinier, an active alumnus and member of the Business Council, the Executive Advisory Group for the Leon Hess School of Business Administration, became chairman of the Student Career Mentoring Program, which eventually led to the first Monmouth University Student Chapter of JSAHR.

The members of the JSAHR Student Chapter are Erika Ortiz, president; Jonathan Porcello, vice president; Sandra Olszewski, secretary; Courtney Muller, treasurer; DeManuel Edmondson, public relations chairman; and Blair Ringgold, conference chairman.  Other members include Andrew Bachmann, Nicole Barry, graduate student, Monika Bartnik, Nicole Johnson, Jennifer Laauser, Kristina Lane, Michele Mann, Chris Occhiogrosso, Danielle Olszewski, Dara Palms, Elizabeth Roussos, Casey Smith, and Andrea Sodhi.

Jeff Mass, who was instrumental in the creation of the JSAHR Student Chapter, serves as its advisor. He is the career counselor/job developer for Career Services at Monmouth University.  (jmass@monmouth.edu. 732 571 3597).

Besides the recognition of Monmouth University Student Chapter #5691 of JSAHR, the JSAHR business meeting will feature “A Day of HR Learning,” during which a panel of HR experts will lead an interactive, ‘speed’ learning workshop that focuses on the six key areas of HR knowledge essential for professional success.

The registration fee and a full buffet breakfast is $25.00 for JSAHR members; $40.00 for nonmembers; and an additional $5.00 for walk-ins. To register, call Kathi Evans, JSAHR administrator, at 732-270-5204 or email jsahradmin@atbcelebrations.com.  JSAHR is a Superior Merit Award Chapter of SHRM (Society for Human Resource Management), the largest industry group-related to HR in the world.

OHI Hosts “Cupcake Wars”

Posted on August 24, 2012 By

Ocean Health Initiatives (OHI), a federally qualified health center (FQHC), recently hosted the “Cupcake Wars” among its employees to determine who the top bakers are at the three OHI sites: 101 Second Street, Lakewood; and 301 Lakehurst Road, Toms River; and 333 Haywood Road, Manahawkin.

Employees entered their specialty cupcake treats from the health conscious to the sweet and sugary.  Judges included Warren Sherard, chairman of the OHI board of directors; Deb Levinson, member of the board of directors; Dr. Theresa Berger, CEO of OHI; Dr. Nancy Tham, CMO (Chief Medical Officer); and Bridget Hogan, COO.

At the end of the “Cupcake Wars,” everyone enjoyed the results. The “Cupcake Wars” were part of the employee events for National Health Center Week, the early part of August. National Health Center Week is spearheaded in New Jersey by the New Jersey Primary Care Association (NJPCA), a nonprofit corporation that represents the organizational providers and affiliates of community-based ambulatory health care statewide.

The winners were Michele Moeltner, LPN (Licensed Nurse Practitioner), Lakewood site, and Lynn Walker RN (Registered Nurse) at the Toms River/ Stafford site.  Moeltner’s creation of a Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup Brownie Cupcake, topped with an edible-like hamburger, received a perfect score for creativity. The judges said, “The perfect surprise in this chocolate brownie cupcake was the peanut butter cup filling! The mini hamburger topping added an extra sweet treat, created with vanilla wafers, sesame seeds, icing, and coconut shavings for lettuce.”

Walker’s cupcake creation, Apple Cake with caramel frosting topped with a cinnamon stick, was made entirely from scratch, including the caramel drizzle and the icing. Walker said if she did not become a nurse, she would have become a baker.

For further information, contact Jennifer Corey, marketing coordinator, at 732-719-9026.
