Orthopedic Practice Announces Scholarship Winner

Posted on August 8, 2011 By

The only thing she ever wanted to do was help people. And she never thought she would do anything in medicine…. Her future crystallized, however, when senior high school student Jeanne Russo, Farmingdale, shadowed PA Rupa Patel a  whole summer at CentraState Hospital after Russo’s mom Geralyn had visited the emergency room with a back problem. Up until that time, Russo did not even know what a PA was.

Now the 2011Howell High School graduate has won a $1,000.00 scholarship from the orthopedic surgeons at Advanced Orthopedics and Sports Medicine Institute (AOSMI) of Freehold, Monroe, Jackson, and Wall townships toward her college education at Marywood University, Scranton, Pennsylvania, where she will be earning her bachelor’s and master’s degrees, and a PA (Physician Assistant) license, in a five-year program.

A physician assistant or PA* is a licensed and highly skilled health care professional who practices medicine with physician supervision.  PAs conduct physical exams, diagnose and treat illnesses, order and interpret tests, counsel on preventive health care, assist in surgery, and can write prescriptions (in most states).

Dr. Gregg Berkowitz, an orthopedic surgeon at AOSMI, said, “There is going to be a major demand for  physician assistants because they are an asset to medical providers.”

Dr. Michael Greller, managing partner at AOSMI, said, “Being a physician’s assistant is one of the most rapidly growing fields in the world of medicine. Being a licensed a PA, a medical professional, is the future of medicine. We’re looking to hire our fourth PA right now.”

Russo said, “I am grateful to the doctors at AOSMI for giving me the opportunity to win this scholarship and to come here today to meet everyone.”

Dr. Gregg Berkowitz said, “This scholarship is intended to encourage young people who are interested in any aspect of the health care field. In our practice, we are concerned about the projected shortage of health care providers in the United States, and we thought this scholarship might be a nice way to support students who are interested in the field of health care.”

Russo was selected from 48 applicants.  For further information, contact Jessica Wilcox, Care Coordinator at Advanced Orthopedics and Sports Medicine Institute, at 732-720-6414.

About Jeanne Russo:
Jeanne Russo is a 2011 Howell High School graduate.  She is a member of the National Honor Society and the Spanish Honor Society, and was named a Rebel’s Scholar for achieving all A’s and B’s for all four years of high school. Russo played clarinet in the marching and concert bands. She also played soccer in grades 9-11, serving as JV captain in her sophomore year. She will be playing Division 3 soccer at Marywood this fall. To earn money, Russo has worked at the Spring Lake Bath and Tennis Club since 2007.  She has also volunteered in the Howell Police Athletic League since 2008, participating in community service projects; and at The Manor at CentraState Hospital, Freehold.

She is entering the freshman class of Marywood University in the Honors Program for having a cumulative grade point average above 3.5 in high school.  She was also named one of five Maxis-Gillet Scholar’s at Marywood.

The Advanced Orthopedics and Sports Medicine Institute (AOSMI) is an orthopedic practice located at Pond View Professional Park, 301 Professional View Drive, Freehold; 312 Applegarth Road, Monroe Township; Autumn Ridge, Building #1, Suite 212, 3350 Route 138, Wall; and 161 Bartley Road, Jackson, N.J.  AOSMI a state-of-the-art orthopedic practice that provides advanced medical care.  The physicians at AOSMI have a combined 100 years of experience. For more information, call 732-720-2555 or visit WWW.AdvancedOrthoSports.com.

*PA Training: Upon graduation, physician assistants take a national certification examination developed by the National Commission on Certification of PAs in conjunction with the National Board of Medical Examiners. To maintain their national certification, PAs must log 100 hours of continuing medical education every two years and sit for a recertification every six years. Graduation from an accredited physician assistant program and passage of the national certifying exam are required for state licensure.  (Taken from MEDEX website)

Energy Grant Will Save Lakewood Taxpayers Money

Posted on August 5, 2011 By

As part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), Lakewood Township has received an Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) of $678,200.00, which will be used to save energy, improve efficiency, install energy saving equipment, and help the environment through the use of solar energy, all without spending local tax dollars.  Taxpayers will actually realize a substantial savings.

This grant is being used for two separate projects. One project will involve replacing  windows and doors and installing special lighting to conserve energy. The second project will focus on solar energy.

With Steven Reinman, the director of Economic Development, Lakewood Township officials and Birdsall Engineering did an assessment of all the township buildings and determined the projects and township sites primed for energy upgrades.

According to Reinman, “The municipal building alone is 40 years old and is in dire need of upgrades to make it more energy efficient. As a result, the replacement of most windows and doors, and the replacement of the boiler and air conditioning systems (HVAC) with high efficiency systems should result in significant savings for the town.”

Other townships buildings, such as the inspections building on Fourth Street and emergency services building on Pine Street and New Hampshire Avenue, will receive similar upgrades.  Since Public Works is a fairly new facility, it should not require any upgrades at this time.

Because converting to solar energy requires a great investment for the township, township officials have decided to offer an RFP, for which investors can propose to install solar systems on township buildings and offer a significant reduction in electricity costs.

Reinman says, “For example, if our usage is now 1,000 kilowatts a month, and solar companies can produce 200 kilowatts a month, 20 percent of our usage would be at a significantly reduced rate. Solar systems are installed on a roof and tied into a specific meter. Whatever solar energy is produced is distinguished from what is being taken from JCP&L. With a solar system, we would be able to reduce the amount of energy we use from JCP&L.  The percentages of how much solar energy we use, however, will vary from building to building, depending on how much solar capacity is on a particular roof.”

Another solar project could involve the BlueClaws stadium, a Township property. Here canopies with solar panels on the top of poles can be installed in large parking lots, a common practice. Cars park beneath the canopies so no parking area is lost. The canopies have full access to the sun, making them a solar farm on poles.

Reinman says, “The successful RFP respondent will be producing electricity and selling it to BlueClaws. Any excess production will be sold back to JCP&L. The terms of the deal are endless. We are very excited about the possibilities. I think we are getting a lot of leverage out of the money from the federal government allotted to Lakewood under this grant. A good portion of it is going to the direct improvement of our facilities. Birdsall will manage the solar process for us with the small amount of money left.

“Birdsall Engineering has done quite a few solar projects in many municipalities and counties. Because of their technical knowledge and experience, Birdsall is designing a solar panel grid system to be put on five municipal buildings. They will also manage the entire project from the RFP process and responses to the actual contract.”

Since there have been very few local responses to various bids in the past, bids for Lakewood projects will be advertised on the home page of the township website at www.lakewoodnj.gov and in newspaper advertisements.

Ervin Oross, community development director, says, “This grant is a great thing for the township because we can realize hard cost savings to the taxpayers via efficiency and energy systems. It is important for the public to know that we had a professional energy auditdone that guided the committee’s decisions about how to judiciously spend the grant money we received. Birdsall was fantastic because they had experience in 30 other towns to help us put this thing together.”

The HVAC for the municipal building and all other municipal facilities included in the plan started August 1.  The solar specs are in the process of being designed.

Members of the steering committee included Senator Robert Singer; Committeeman Ray Coles; Lawrence Bathgate from Bathgate, Wegener & Wolf; representatives from Birdsall Engineering, Steve Reinman, and Ervin Oross.

Silver Bay Medical Center Announces Summer Hours

Posted on July 28, 2011 By

In today’s world, you may not have time to wait for a doctor’s appointment.  You don’t have to, even in the summer. Silver Bay Medical Center, 1851 Hooper Avenue (Silverton area), Toms River, N.J., a walk-in and “by appointment only” practice has announced its summer hours.

Doctors, who treat patients of all ages from newborns to the elderly, are on staff six days a week. No appointments are needed Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.; and Saturday 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. during July and August.  Hours by appointment are Monday and Tuesday, 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.; and Wednesday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

According to Vincent DeStasio, D.O., Medical Director, “Outdoor activities in the summer often increase a family’s need for immediate medical attention. With the hectic schedules most people have, patients appreciate having a facility where they can go to get medical attention without a doctor’s appointment.”

Silver Bay Medical Center has a laboratory on site. Most insurances are accepted.  The doctors on staff are Vincent DeStasio, Michele Lanza, Dalia Hanna, and Yasmeen Jafry.

Golf Outing to Benefit Injured Soldiers

Posted on July 21, 2011 By

In 2008, when their son miraculously survived the loss of both his legs and other severe traumatic injuries from an explosion of an IED (Improvised Explosive Device) in Afghanistan, the Brennans vowed to help other families and those members of the U.S. Armed Forces who were injured in the line of duty.  And Joanne and James Brennan, Howell, parents of Captain Brennan, have kept their word.

The 4th Annual “Brennan Stands Alone Foundation” Golf Outing will take place Thursday, August 4 at the Cruz Golf Course, 55 Birdsall Road, Farmingdale. Registration and a continental breakfast begin at 8:00 a.m.; and the Shotgun Start is at 9:00 a.m.

The golfing fee of $125.00 per golfer or $500.00 per foursome includes lunch, sponsored by the Howell PBA, Local 228; and many prizes, including a putting contest for a flat screen TV.  Sponsorships, ranging from $150.00 to $2500.00 are still available.

Make checks payable to Brennan Stands Alone Foundation, a 501(c)(3), and send your registration to Jim Kirk, Kirk’s Florist, 80 West Farms Road, Farmingdale, N.J.; or call Jim Kirk at 848-459-6816.  To register online, visit BrennanStandsAlone.org.

Among other donations the Brennan Stands Alone Foundation provided all the bedroom furniture for the two daughters of Michael Minard, a double amputee, when their Homes for Our Troops was completed.

The Foundation also donated an estimated $60,000.00 for Anthony Thompson, Corpsman Second Class, Navy Medic; Bradley Thomas, Army Specialist; and Scott Noss, Army SFC, who all sustained brain injuries, so their caretakers had lodging and could stay by their sides for one year while they participated in an experimental brain injury program at Kessler Institute.

The most recent recipient of the Foundation was David Noblit, an army SPC from Pennsylvania.  The Foundation donated $3,000.00 to build a handicapped ramp onto his house and $1,000.00 worth of gift cards to defer the cost of transportation to and from Walter Reed Hospital, Washington.

Captain Brennan will be at the golf outing, driving the beverage cart around and personally thanking everyone.
