A New Road in Town! Gene Hendrickson Way

Posted on April 5, 2018 By

For more than 35 years, his store on Clifton Avenue, Gene’s Photo Center and later Gene’s Photo and Sports Center, became the depository for photos and artifacts about Lakewood that people no longer wanted. Gene Hendrickson preserved them. He loved Lakewood and became known as its “unofficial historian,” presenting slide shows and commentary on the town to more than 5,000 people throughout the years.

On Sunday, April 8, 2018, at 2:00 p.m. the road leading from the entrance of Pine Park to the Sheldon Wolpin Lakewood Historical Museum will officially become “Gene Hendrickson Way” in honor of Eugene L. Hendrickson, who was very active in gathering and preserving Lakewood’s rich history. It was Gene who served as the first chairman of the Lakewood Heritage Commission.

The dedication of Gene Hendrickson Way, sponsored by the Lakewood Historical Society and the Lakewood Heritage Commission, will feature several speakers, including Committeeman Michael D’Elia, Heritage Commission member Richard Errickson, Lakewood Heritage Commission President Steven Wexler, and Lakewood Historical Society President Dr. Stan Liptzin. After the dedication, friends and family are invited to gather at the museum for refreshments.

About Gene Hendrickson: Eugene L. Hendrickson went to Lakewood High School, but left early in the 1940s to join the Marine Corp, serving in the Pacific and China during WWII. When he returned home, he went to the School of Modern Photography, NYC, to pursue his interest in photography and cameras. Upon graduation, he returned to Lakewood to start his business Gene’s Photo Center, which he operated for 37 years with his late wife Jane whom he had married in 1947.  Their children are Gene Hendrickson, Lakewood, and Patricia Hutton, Buckingham, Penn.

Gene was devoted to Lakewood. Among other positions, he was president of the Lakewood Chamber of Commerce. He was also chairman of the Lakewood Redevelopment Commission that was instrumental in the redevelopment of Clifton Avenue and downtown Lakewood.

His interest in Veterans Affairs led him to serve as Commander of the Jackson Township VFW, Post 4703. He also served as the Ocean County Commander of the VFW in 1959.

Holocaust Remembrance Day at the Marlboro Jewish Center Features Documentary about Roman Jews during Nazi Occupation

Posted on March 23, 2018 By

What was the experience of Roman Jews living in Nazi-occupied Rome? The public is invited to a free Yom Ha Shoah* program and screening of the award-winning documentary film “Oro Macht Frei” (“Gold Will Set You Free”), presented by Second Generation, Wednesday, April 11, 2018, at 7:00 p.m. at the Marlboro Jewish Center, Congregation Ohev Shalom, 103 School Road West, Marlboro, N.J.

“Oro Macht Frei,” awarded the Best International Documentary at the 2015 Garden State Film Festival, tells the story of the Roman Jewish experience during the Nazi occupation of Rome (September 1943 – June 1944). Weaving testimony from Roman Jews who lived there together with historical research by renowned scholars, “Oro Macht Frei” seeks to bring the viewer into a personal and relatable reflection of the Holocaust in Italy through the eyes of this unique and historic community.

Joel Markel, founder and president of Preferred Home Health Care & Nursing Services, Eatontown, and host of Preferred Company’s live radio show on WOBM–AM, Monday through Friday, 8:00 to 10:00 a.m., is the executive producer of “Oro Macht Frei” and founder of Ottimo Films.

Markel said, “I created this 70-minute documentary not only to tell of the Holocaust in Italy but as a way of eradicating hatred and bigotry throughout the world.”

Joel Markel, the son of a Hungarian Auschwitz survivor, wanted to honor the experience of his mother and the millions of victims of the Jewish genocide by contributing to the field of Holocaust memory. In 2004, during a tour of the Roman Ghetto, Markel first heard the story of Kappler’s Gold, an extortion plot perpetrated by Herbert Kappler, the head of the SS, who demanded 50 kilos of gold within 36 hours or 200 Jewish family heads would be deported. Markel immediately felt connected to this story because for generations his family had worked as jewelers.

The organization Second Generation at Congregation Ohev Shalom strives to make sure the Holocaust is never forgotten and will never happen again. For more information about the Yom HaShoah program or Second Generation, call Marvin Glickstein, president of Second Generation, at 732-972-0259 or the synagogue office at 732-536-2300.
