Home Health Aides to Become Certified Dementia Practitioners

Posted on August 2, 2016 By

Preferred Home Health Care & Nursing Services, with headquarters in Eatontown, N.J., held a private two-day Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia Care seminar at its offices for their employees. The eight-hour seminar outlined diagnosis, prognosis, treatment, communication, depression, repetitive and aggressive behavior, paranoia, personal care, pain, nutrition, activities, and end of life.

The seminar was offered in addition to the mandatory 12 hours of training required to maintain the CHHA (Certified Home Health Aide) certification. Fourteen employees who completed the seminar are expected to receive a two-year Certified Dementia Practitioner certification through the National Council of Certified Dementia Practitioners.

Jonathan Herman, COO of Preferred, said, “We have taken an initiative to train our employees in an effort to exceed requirements on dementia education for them. As the number of people living with dementia increases, we at Preferred feel that it is imperative to make sure that the clinical team, especially the front-line caregivers, the CHHAs are prepared to face the challenges of caring for people with dementia.”

Ellisa Lee BS, RN, CDP*, CADDCT**, the founder and training director of Prestige Medical Solutions, North Plainfield, N.J., conducted the training. Prestige Medical Solutions is a state-approved private vocational school that offers various training courses, including such corporate training as the Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia Care seminar.
