AFP-NJ (Assoc. of Fundraising Professionals) will honor Joel Markel, the founder and president of Preferred Home Health Care & Nursing Services (PHHC), Eatontown, with its Excellence in Philanthropy Award, during a virtual event from 12:00 to 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 30.

The AFP-NJ Excellence in Philanthropy Awards recognize fundraisers, consultants, donors, nonprofit organizations, corporations, and other advocates for their generosity, impact, and spirit toward improving lives in countless communities throughout New Jersey. The Excellence in Philanthropy Awards ceremony is also a fundraising opportunity for AFP-NJ.

Markel and his family are well known for their philanthropic work throughout the area. Markel is a lifetime member of the board of directors and the chairman Emeritus of the Emmanuel Cancer Foundation (ECF), which provides free specialized services to New Jersey families who are caring for a child with cancer. He has made a long-term commitment to the Homeless Health Initiatives, a volunteer outreach program run by Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Markel is also a supporter of LADACIN Network, Brothers for Life, and Jewish Family Services of Middlesex County NJ, among many others.

Joann Passantino, the executive director of Emmanuel Cancer Foundation who nominated Markel for the AFP award, said, “Joel is the kindest person I have ever met. Despite his many amazing accomplishments, he always remembers what it was like to be a family in need of help. His graciousness and generosity are a true gift to ECF and to anyone fortunate enough to know him. There is no one more deserving of this honor than Joel.”

Since 1987, PHHC has provided a wide range of medical and non-medical home health care services from pediatric to geriatric care in 16 locations throughout New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. Joel Markel prides himself on the fact that his agency gives the “highest degree of custodial and medical nursing care, along with giving guidance on the emotional issues families may face.”

APF-NJ funds raised from sponsorships, ticket sales, and ad journals sales help the chapter to continue its mission of educating fundraisers and fostering an extraordinary culture of philanthropy in New Jersey.
