The public is invited to Lakewood Township’s Arbor Day celebration and tree plantings sponsored by Lakewood Township and the Lakewood Shade Tree Commission, Friday, May 3, 2019, at 1:00 p.m., at Lake Carasaljo Band Shell area, North Lake Dive, Lakewood.

At the ceremony, with help from the Lakewood Public Works Department, officials will plant three Snow Fountain Weeping Cherry Trees (Botanical Name: Prunus Snofozam Snow Fountains). These ornamental cherry trees traditional grow to be eight to 15 feet tall and have a canopy that spread six to eight feet wide.

Arbor Day, first celebrated in 1872 in the United States, encourages individuals and groups to plant trees because of their environmental importance.  Lakewood has been awarded “Tree City USA” for the past 36 years for its outstanding urban forestry, having planted hundreds of trees over the years.

Craig Theibault, vice chairman of the Shade Tree Commission, said, “The members of the Shade Tree Commission hope you will be able to attend as we celebrate Arbor Day and help beautiful the grounds of this wonderful scenic area in our township.”

Shade Tree Commission members include Chairman Zev Stern, Vice Chairman Craig Theibault, Tzvi Gordon, Raphael Miller, Moshe Raitzik, and Mary Kay Malec, secretary. The alternate Shade Tree Commission members are Akiva Silverstein and Abraham Neuhaus.
