New Teacher at the Gateway School, Carteret

Chelsea Leonard, Matawan, has been hired for the Gateway School, Carteret, one of three RKS Association private special education schools approved by the N.J. Department of Education for students with special needs and disabilities.

Leonard, one of the seven teachers at the Gateway School, oversees classroom management, differentiates instruction by creating lessons that accommodate students’ various learning abilities and learning styles, and works with staff at the Gateway School to help students achieve to their maximum potential.

Before joining the staff at Gateway School, Leonard was a resource room teacher in the Hazlet school district.

After graduating from Raritan High School, Leonard earned a B.A. and an M.A. in Education from Montclair University.  Leonard is active in Spotlight Players, a community theater in Matawan.

Leonard said, “I am excited to work here at Gateway with Team (Room) 206. We are learning about the planets and money, and reviewing spelling words. We are excited to have our first CBI (community-based instruction) experience this week. CBI takes students into the community to give them real-life experiences, such as how to order food, how to create a shopping list and follow it, and how take the bus, among other every day skills.  Team 206 strives every day to be great members of both the Gateway and Carteret communities.” e
