We’ve Got Talent! Special Needs Students Perform at Harbor School Talent Show
The staff at Harbor School, Eatontown, recently gave 40 students with special needs and disabilities an opportunity to showcase their unique abilities in a two-and-half-hour school-wide talent show attended by students, parents, and staff.
Students of all ages at the Harbor School, one of three RKS Associates private special education schools approved by the N.J. Department of Education, decided which talent they wanted to share with their peers, staff, and Harbor families. Then they worked with dance teacher Santhe Bielk and music teacher Amanda Latham to practice for the show.
Besides singing and dancing, students did stand-up comedy, played acoustic guitar and piano, and performed in a drama skit.
Since students asked Karin DeMarco, Occupational Therapist, and Sarah McNulty, Speech Therapist, to help them with a talent show several years ago, they have been coordinating this annual event and encouraging students to sign up and showcase their abilities. Students prepared for three months.
Erik Glazner, supervisor of instruction of RKS Associates, said, “There was a huge turnout to the show. Many families came to support their son or daughter as well as all the students.”
The Alpha, Harbor, and Gateway schools each offer a twelve-month program with a wide range of services, including speech, occupational and physical therapy; counseling; music; computers; physical education; and vocational training.
