Very Few Gifts Last a Lifetime – This One Can
“When you sew, you have something that will last to show for your efforts.”
Elizabeth Travis Johnson
Pam Miller, RN, the director of nursing at Preferred Home Health Care & Nursing Services (PHHC), with headquarters in Eatontown, N.J., started and personally funds a sewing project for people in Haiti. To continue the project, Miller is asking that people donate portable electric sewing machines.
In 2009, Miller arrived in Haiti supplied with medicines, toiletries, and used clothing as part of a mobile medical team of doctors, nurses, and dentists. Miller realized that for religious reasons the women would only take skirts, not slacks.
The next year she and her friends made more than 180 skirts and shipped them to Haiti. When Miller returned to Haiti after the devastating earthquake of 2010, she not only took care of patients, but also made sure each woman received a skirt.
Giving out skirts was not the answer in keeping up with the need. Teaching the women to make their own skirts, however, might be. Miller shipped fabric, notions, supplies, and treadle sewing machines to Haiti and met with three people with the hope they would start a business.
One of the people, Madame Francois, went to school at Miller’s expense on the condition she would teach others to sew. Now Madame Francois is the sewing instructor for 12 students each year, earning $75.00 a month. Having outgrown the clinic, they meet in their own building every Saturday for five hours. At their graduation ceremony each March, students are given a sewing machine.
Initially, the machines had to be treadle. With more and more houses now equipped with electricity, Miller and her group Penny Miller’s Sewing Academy are seeking portable electric machines because they are easier to handle and ship. Miller is asking the public to donate portable sewing machines.
To donate a portable machine, email Lisa Gallicchio, director of community relations for PHHC, at lisa@preferredcares.com or call 732-547-9886.

A new IHNOC fundraising initiative, “$100 from 1,000” to raise $100,000 will help the IHNOC continue to help working families with shelter, food and “home” in local Ocean County congregations, among other services.
A $100.00 annual tax-deductible donation from individuals or businesses will help this 18-year-old organization continue to do its work today and for years to come. To donate online, visit www.ihnoc.net and then click on “donate.” Donations by check made out to IHNOC should be sent to IHNOC 253 Chestnut Street, Toms River, NJ 08753.

IHNOC board president Rev. Al Spangler noted that the average family spends about 103 days in the IHNOC program.
Pat Cash, executive director of IHNOC, said that although IHNOC actively and continually applies for government and private grants, the organization is competing with thousands of other worthy nonprofits in New Jersey and funding has been shrinking or even disappearing.

Nutcracker Ballet Returns to the Strand with the Garden State Philharmonic
The Nutcracker is back! After a year-long absence, the Atlantic City Ballet and the Garden State Philharmonic have partnered again to bring this treasured classic to the Strand Theater in Lakewood on December 22, 2015 at 7:00 p.m.
The Atlantic City Ballet, a professional ballet company based in Atlantic City, has called The Strand its Ocean County home since first performing there in 2013 with the Garden State Philharmonic. The historic theater, considered one of the most majestic in New Jersey, is the perfect backdrop for the Nutcracker. Although most ballet companies are forced to use canned music for their performances because of budget cuts, the Atlantic City Ballet has been on a mission to reverse that trend.
Alexandria Pieroni, managing director of the The Atlantic City Ballet, said, “The ballet’s founding Artistic Director Phyllis Papa and the philharmonic’s Artistic Director and Conductor Maestro Anthony LaGruth make a great team. Add that to the highly professional staff at The Strand and it’s a marriage made in performing arts heaven.”
The Nutcracker is a classic that tells the story of a little girl named Clara who is given a magical nutcracker doll on Christmas Eve. Embarking on a wondrous journey through the Kingdom of Snow and the Land of Sweets, Clara encounters many unforgettable and timeless characters. Young and old alike will experience the many magical moments of this beloved holiday ballet.
Pieroni said, “Don’t miss this opportunity to see this holiday classic performed with a full orchestra. It is a night too magical to miss!!!!!”
Tickets are $50.00 to $25.00 for adults; $15.00 for students; and $20.00 for seniors. Group discounts are available. Purchase tickets online at http://www.strand.org. For more information or to purchase tickets online, visit www.strand.org or call the box office at 732.367.7789.
