Many factors can affect a person’s career advancement in an organization. Why is it some people’s careers seem to accelerate while others who work hard can’t get ahead?
The presentation “Creating an Inclusive Workplace” examines the forces operating in today’s workplace at the monthly meeting of JSAHR (The Jersey Shore Association for Human Resources), open to the public, Thursday, October 11, 2018, from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m., at Jumping Brook Country Club, 210 Jumping Brook Road, Neptune, N.J.
Learn the eight diversity-related forces, examine how they may impact an individual positively or negatively, discuss who is responsible to counteract these forces, and suggest strategies to counteract them.
The registration fee, including a full buffet breakfast, is $30.00 for JSAHR members; $40.00 for nonmembers; $25.00 for guests and those in-transition, and $10.00 for full-time students. Sponsorship for this meeting is still available.

Lakewood Township Recreation Department Announces Its Fall Schedule
The Lakewood Recreation Department has released the 2018 schedule of its fall recreation programs, including soccer, wrestling, open gym nights, and adult programs. All sport programs begin the week of September 24, 2018.
Fall co-ed instructional and league soccer play is Monday and Wednesday evenings for children ages 4 – 12. The schedule for children ages 4, 5, and 6 is 6:30- 7:15 p.m.; for 7 and 8 year olds from 7:15 – 8:00 p.m.; for 9 and 10 year olds from 8:00 to 8:45 p.m.; for 11 and 12 year olds from 8:45 – 9:30 p.m.
Fridays are reserved as make up time in case of rain. Register at the John Patrick Sports Complex, Vine Street, Lakewood. The registration fee is $10.00.
Students in grades 1 – 12 will learn the skills, conditioning, discipline, and techniques of “Escape” wrestling in the Lakewood High School wrestling room, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30–8:00 p.m. The registration fee is $10.00 for residents and $50.00 for non Lakewood residents.
Open Gym in the Lakewood High School gym for high school students and up will be Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. and includes basketball, volleyball, weight room, and indoor track. The fee is $2.00 for each visit. No charge for Senior Citizens. Students in grades 9 -12 must have a parental permission slip.
Only the instruction is free for adult arts & crafts, jewelry making, and crocheting programs, which meet in the Lakewood Community Center, Fourth Street. Bring your own supplies. Crochet instruction, beginning September 18, meets Tuesdays, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.; Jewelry Making, beginning October 15, meets Mondays, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.; Arts and Crafts, beginning October 17, meets Wednesdays, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Scary Things Will Be Happening at the Strand Theater in Lakewood – Be Afraid … Very Afraid!

Webinar Examines Protecting Your Business When Employees Use Remote Access
Although remote access increases workforce efficiency, it also increases the risk of cyber intrusion. Employee of Preferred Home Health Care Selected as Hispanic Leader Making a Difference in New Jersey
Kimberly Lamberty-Torres, Linwood, client services coordinator for Preferred Home Health Care & Nursing Services (PHHC), Galloway office, was selected as one of the “Hispanic Leaders Who Are Making a Difference in New Jersey.” The South Jersey Journal will recognize Lamberty-Torres, who has worked for Preferred for six years, with a profile about her contributions.
Lamberty-Torres volunteered in the campaign “Puerto Rico Strong.” After she arrived in Puerto Rico on October 6, 2017, the campaign raised more than $40,000 and was instrumental in shipping to Puerto Rico three containers of supplies, food, tarps, water, and many other items.
After the trip to Puerto Rico, Lamberty-Torres co-founded Latinos En Marcha, an active advocacy group that participated in the Unity March for Puerto Rico on November 19, 2017.
Lamberty-Torres said, “We had the largest contingent representing the state of Pennsylvania.”
Lamberty-Torres, Latinos En Marcha, and the Free Library of Philadelphia held a FEMA clinic for several weeks and assisted more than 100 evacuee families with FEMA applications and appeals. The group participated in a Woman’s March this past January to continue to highlight the plight of Puerto Rico and its people.
On a more local level, Lamberty-Torres and Damaris Esquea, Pleasantville, a certified home health aide for PHHC, recently made sure that Rosaline Glover, Pleasantville, a client of theirs, received a replacement motorized wheelchair through the One Wish program of PHHC when they found out that Glover couldn’t leave her home because her wheelchair was broken.

Visit the Stemlab at Gateway School September 27
The Gateway School, 60 High Street, Carteret, a private special education school for students with disabilities, is holding a Stemlab Open House, Thursday, September 27, 2018, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Parents and friends will see how this unique learning environment fosters learning about STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) for students.
This state-of-the-art lab features six computers with more than 100 different software applications. The lab also includes kits and technology equipment that cover more than 60 content areas, allowing students to explore a wide range of projects and challenges, make choices, problem solve, communicate, explore topics more in depth, and build on next generation skills.
In the Stemlab, students are given a project and using problem solving skills, they create projects ranging from music to building, power-point presentations, experimentation, digital graphics, and more. Some projects included building Leprechaun traps, photo shopping their picture in Christmas or ocean backgrounds, building simple machines with Knex and Legos, and exploring temperatures with thermometers. Students have worked on digital graphics in creating posters, comic books, and the yearbook. They have also practiced some coding skills, and created songs and soundtracks using a program called Acid Music Studio.
Gateway is one of three RKS Associates state-approved special education schools that include the Alpha School, Jackson, and the Harbor School, Eatontown. Each school offers a twelve-month program with a wide range of services, including speech, occupational, and physical therapy; counseling; music; computers; physical education; and vocational training for children who have challenges, such as multiple disabilities, cognitively impairments, autistic spectrum disorder, learning disabilities, traumatic brain injuries, behavioral disorders, or other health impairments.

Two Eagle Ridge Junior League Golfers Make the All Star Team
Two Eagle Ridge Golf Club Junior League players have made the PGA Junior League Golf All Star Team. Kevin Ostrander, age 10, Pt. Pleasant, and Alexandra Schaul, age 13, Howell, whose team won two rounds of playoffs, will now represent New Jersey for the Regional Championship at LedgeRock Golf Club in Pennsylvania on September 15 and 16, 2018.
Ostrander and Schaul will be joining other All Star golf players at LedgeRock as Team NJ, hoping to advance to the national competition in Arizona this November.
Rylee Plitz, Toms River, head golf professional at Eagle Ridge Golf Club, 2 Augusta Drive, Lakewood, N.J., said, “Congratulations to our New Jersey PGA Jr. League Section Champions, League 8! It was an awesome match that came down to a playoff hole and then a chip-off to finally decide the winner.”
Registration for the PGA Junior League program at Eagle Ridge opens in February. The program runs throughout May and June. Plitz said that this year enough golfers, ages 8 – 13, signed up to form two teams. Out of those teams, Ostrander and Schaul became All Stars.
The PGA Jr. League began in 2011 and now has more than 42,000 youth participants. The program, accessible to all interested kids, is designed to be recreational and developmental, focusing on fun, recreation, good health, and sportsmanship. It highlights team play, with a two-person scramble format, versus individual competition and serves as a feeder system to transition youth golfers to existing junior golf programs.
