OHI Offers Free Pregnancy Testing in Lakewood and Toms River
The OB/GYN Department of OHI (Ocean Health Initiatives), a federally qualified health center, is offering free pregnancy testing at 101 Second Street, Lakewood, and 301 Lakehurst Road, Toms River. No appointments are required, and patients with a positive test result can see an OB/GYN provider at the same time.
Same day appointments are available for prenatal and GYN services, including Saturdays and late evenings. OB/GYN patients will also be able to get prenatal vitamins or oral contraceptives for a minimal cost on the same day as their visit in the Lakewood pharmacy, which is expected to open soon.
OHI offers comprehensive women’s services, including complete pregnancy care, non-stress testing, post-partum care, WIC services on site, and pediatric prenatal visits with the opportunity to meet your newborn’s pediatrician during your last appointment.
Gynecological services include annual exams; cancer screening exams and testing, STD testing, treatment and education; HPV testing; colposcopy; and menopausal education and treatment. OHI offers GYN screening exams and testing during annual physicals in its Internal Medicine Department.
Dr. Gilbert Fleischer, CMO at OHI, said, “It is very important to us to be able to see our OB patients on the same day as their positive pregnancy test. Ensuring our patients get in the door and immediately into treatment ensures both mother and child are given the best opportunity for the safest pregnancy and delivery.” Almost 90 percent of OHI’s prenatal patients entered treatment during their first trimester.

Arbor Day Ceremony to Take Place at the Lakewood School District Office Building
An Arbor Day ceremony will take place at the Lakewood School District office, 200 Ramsey Ave, Lakewood, at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, April 24. Deputy Mayor Menashe Miller will read a proclamation in honor of Arbor Day.
Superintendent Laura Winters chose to plant two Kwanzan Cherry trees in an area that lacks vegetation on both sides of the entrance to the district offices. The School District’s horticulture class will help landscape the areas around the cherry trees with additional shrubs and a sign will state that the trees were planted on Arbor Day 2015.
In past years, trees have been planted at township fire companies, EMS, Lakewood Public Works and the BlueClaws’ stadium. Three years ago, the Arbor Day ceremony took place at the Clarke School; two years it was at the Oak Street School; last year it was at the Spruce Street School.
Dr. Gross said, “Recently we decided to hold the Arbor Day ceremony at schools so we could educate the children about the holiday. Superintendent Winters also thought it would be a great idea to involve the horticulture class students in the planting and the ceremony. We are delighted that the students will be able to put what they learn in class into action by helping with the Arbor Day planting.”
Interim Principal Richard Goldstein and Horticulture Teacher Brian Surgent report that some students will be reading tree-related poems and others will be providing music for the ceremony.
Dr. Gross, a full-time administrator and biology professor at Georgian Court University (GCU), is also the director of the university’s arboretum.
The first celebration of Arbor Day in the United States took place in 1872. The holiday, held on the last Friday in April, was created to encourage individuals and groups to plant trees and realize their importance.
Lakewood has embraced that concept, holding Arbor Day ceremonies and planting hundreds of trees over the years. Craig J. Theibault, former chairman of the Lakewood Shade Tree Commission from 1994 to 2010 and a current member, said, “This is the 34th year Lakewood is among 172 New Jersey municipalities that hold the distinction of being designated a Tree City USA. You know what they say: ‘The best time to plant a tree is 30 years ago; the second best time is today.’”
Theibault, who holds a B. S. degree in Ornamental Horticulture from Delaware Valley College of Science and Agriculture, has been a member of the Ocean County Shade Tree Commission since 1992. Besides serving on the Shade Tree Commission locally, Theibault has also served as a member of the N.J. Community Forestry Council, a 20-member advisory board to the State Forester, since 1999.

Dealing with Toxic and Bullying Employees – May JSAHR Meeting
According to the Workplace Bullying Institute, up to one third of workers may be the victims of workplace bullying. Robert Micera, SPHR, will explain how to deal with toxic and bullying behavior in the workplace, and how to take an active role in ensuring a healthy workplace environment on Thursday, May 14, 2015, at the monthly meeting of JSAHR (The Jersey Shore Association for Human Resources), from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m., Jumping Brook Country Club, 210 Jumping Brook Road, Neptune, N.J.

The registration fee, including a full buffet breakfast, is $30.00 for JSAHR members; $40.00 for nonmembers; $25.00 for those in-transition, and $10.00 for full-time students. This program is pending approval for 1.0 Professional Development Credit toward SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP through SHRM and PHR, SPHR, and GPHR recertification through the HRCI.
JSAHR is a Gold Excel award winner of SHRM (Society for Human Resource Management). ICF, (International Coach Federation), a support network for professional coaches, is the sponsor of May’s JSAHR meeting.

Documentary Produced by Eatontown Man Wins Best International Documentary at Garden State Film Festival
Oro Macht Frei (Gold Will Set You Free), a 70-minute documentary that tells the story of the Roman Jewish experience during the Nazi occupation of Rome, September 1943 through June 1944, won Best International Documentary out of 15 submissions at the 13th annual Garden State Film Festival (GSFF), Atlantic City, on March 22.
Joel Markel, the founder and president of Preferred Home Health Care & Nursing Services, Eatontown, and the executive producer and founder of Ottimo Films, created Oro Macht Frei to create a personal reflection of the Holocaust in Italy by weaving testimony from Roman Jews who lived there with historical research of Susan Zuccotti, Alexander Stille, and Liliana Picciotto. Additionally he wanted to honor the experience of his mother and the millions of victims of the Jewish genocide by contributing to the field of Holocaust memory.
Markel said, “I am extremely proud of the award won at the GSFF. Many years of hard work went into the making of this incredible production. This award goes to the men, women and children of the Holocaust in Italy who were not given a chance to tell about their suffering and deaths at the hands of the Nazis. It is my hope that this film lives on as a testimonial to them.”
In 2004, during a tour of the Roman Ghetto, Markel first heard the story of Kappler’s Gold, an extortion plot perpetrated by Herbert Kappler, the head of the SS, who demanded 50 kilos of gold within 36 hours or 200 Jewish family heads would be deported. Markel immediately felt connected to this story because for generations his family had worked as jewelers and because he is the son of a Hungarian Auschwitz survivor.
“I made this film not only to tell of the Holocaust in Italy but as a way of eradicating hatred and bigotry throughout the world,” said Markel. “My wish would be for it to be shown in schools and institutions worldwide. It is our responsibility as adults to point young minds to healthy and free directions in a world of peace.”
The GSFF is an independent film festival, attended by thousands of people, featuring a weekend full of world-wide independent films. Oro Macht Frei was chosen Best International Documentary by a panel of professional judges based on the strength of the script, its production value, and the content. Many of the films showcased at the GSFF will go on to get distribution.

Feiles and Wirth were both featured in Wien’s book, Are You Listening? The Top 100 Albums of 2001-2010 by New Jersey Artists, each placing two albums in the list.
