OHI Gives Kids a Smile – February Is National Children’s Dental Health Month

Posted on February 2, 2015 By

In recognition of National Children’s Dental Health Month, OHI (Ocean Health Initiatives), a federally qualified health center, will be participating in Give Kids a Smile Day on February 6 from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. under the auspices of New Jersey Dental Association.

On Give Kids a Smile Day many dentists donate their time to help underserved children who are not getting the oral care they need by providing free dental screenings to children 12 and under if they do not have insurance. The screening includes a dental exam, X-rays as needed, oral healthcare instruction, fluoride treatments, and free dental hygiene materials, such as toothbrushes, floss and toothpaste.

Dentists can see children at either OHI’s Lakewood site, 101 Second Street or OHI’s Toms River site, 301 Lakehurst Road. Call the OHI Call Center at 732-363-6655 to schedule an appointment in either English or Spanish.

Throughout the year, OHI offers dental cleanings and full checkups, including X-rays and other screening procedures for children and adults. Dentists are available at the Lakewood and Toms River sites Monday through Friday, beginning at 8:00 a.m.

American Dental Association’s Give Kids a Smile program, now celebrating its 13th year, is designed to raise awareness about the importance of dental care and provides oral health education to all children despite their economic status.

Making the World a Better Place–With Compassion: A Special Project

Posted on January 29, 2015 By

Whether you have a lot of it or barely any at all, compassion is one key to happiness that CAN be heightened and even taught. According to Mayor Greg Fischer, Louisville, Kentucky, “Research shows that compassion spurs economic development, academic achievement, and community building.”

So what exactly is compassion and what does it mean to you? Toms River dentist Dr. Ron Rotem wants to know. Dr. Rotem has started Compassionate Toms River, an initiative of the Charter for Compassion, which is striving to activate the Golden Rule around the world.

For the first project of Compassionate Toms River, Dr. Rotem is inviting all area art students, grades 2-8, to submit paintings and drawings that express what compassion means to them. Comcast Spotlight, the first partner of Compassionate Toms River, has donated more than 500 canvas art boards (9×12) to kick off this project.

Beginning Tuesday, February 10, teachers may pick up the art boards for their class at Dr. Rotem’s office, Rotem Dental Care, 355 Lakehurst Road, Toms River, so that students may illustrate what compassion means to them. The project will end Thursday, April 16, 2015. The teacher whose student or class is best judged to have portrayed compassion, will receive $1000.00 to use for educational purposes.

The mission of Compassionate Toms River is to inspire the growth and development of a culture of compassion in Toms River and the surrounding areas through advocacy, awareness and action.

Compassionate Toms River is a cooperative effort to restore not only compassionate thinking; but, more importantly, compassionate action, which many feel is the center of religious, moral and political life.

To become a judge; to donate art boards or time; and for questions about the Compassionate Toms River program, contact Dr. Rotem at 732-341-8500 or visit CompassionateTomsRiver.org.

What You Can Do to Help During the Pending Blizzard – Lakewood

Posted on January 26, 2015 By

Township officials want to clear the roads as quickly as possible and help residents get safely through the pending blizzard. We need to keep the roads clear so the plows can get through. Here’s how you can help:

1. Do not place any trash cans or recycling cans out for pickup. If you have already placed them at the curb, please take them in. Tuesday’s trash and recycling will be picked up on Wednesday

2. Do not park your cars in the street. Park them in driveways or even on your lawn.

3. Don’t drive unless you absolutely have to.

4. If you haven’tdone it yet, sign up for the Lakewood Township Notification System at www.lakewoodnj.gov to receive Lakewood Township alerts via email or text to cell phones. This alert system tells subscribers about emergencies; Department Of Public Works information, such as trash pickup, snow removal and parking during snow removal; traffic problems; weather related events; school closings; power outage updates; and legal notices.

Click on the Notification Signup on the right side of this website. The Township alert system is free; however, standard text messaging rates from your carrier may apply.

5. Make sure you have enough of the medicine you take.

6. In case of any power outages, make sure to charge your electrical devices, have a battery-operated radio (if possible) and stock up on water.

Stay safe.

Advance Auto Parts, Inc. (NYSE: AAP), the largest automotive aftermarket parts provider in North America, serving both professional installer and do-it-yourself customers, opened its second store in Lakewood because, company officials said, the location for the store is convenient to where their customers live and shop as well as the garages where they take their vehicles for repair.

General Manager Garry Lambusta, a four-year veteran of the automotive and retail sales industries, will work with 25 other Team Members at the new Lakewood location. The Lakewood team brings more than 170 years of combined automotive experience and expertise to benefit customers.

“Advance Auto Parts is committed to bringing our Promise – Service is our best part – to life not only for our customers, but also in the communities where our customers and Team Members live. As part of this commitment, we are pleased to announce a $1,000 check has been donated to the United Way,” said Lambusta.

The new store offers customers a wide range of parts and recognized national brands as well as several free services. Store Team Members will provide free installation for new windshield wipers and also offer a complimentary check of the vehicle’s electrical system and old battery, as well as provide free installation of a new battery with purchase on most vehicles.

The store offers fast parts delivery to local commercial customers, such as professional mechanics and garages. During regular store hours, customers may drop off used motor oil and batteries for recycling, ensuring that these materials don’t end up in landfills where they could harm the environment.

Vehicle know-how is made easier than ever by Advance. The Company’s website, www.AdvanceAutoParts.com, offers articles, online videos, and audio and video podcasts on the website’s “Advance Know-How” section. Customers can order online and pick up at the store in 30 minutes.
