Financial Resources Federal Credit Union’s Food Drive Benefits Four Food Pantries

Posted on January 30, 2012 By

In 2010, nearly 49 million Americans, or 32.6 million adults and 16.2 million children were not sure where their next meal was coming from.  Right now, millions of Americans are struggling with hunger. These are often hard-working adults, children and seniors who simply cannot make ends meet and are forced to go without food for several meals, or even days.  They are unable to consistently get nutritious and adequate amounts of food to maintain a healthy life. (USDA. Coleman-Jensen, A., Nord, M., Andrews, M., & Carlson, S. Household Food Security in the United States in 2010.)

To help people in several local communities, employees of Financial Resources Federal Credit Union (FCU), with headquarters in Bridgewater, N.J., held its third annual food drive during December to support four local food banks: the Franklin Township Food Bank, the Food Bank Network of Somerset County, the Flemington Area Food Pantry, and the Hillsborough Food Pantry.

Financial Resources FCU employees separated and packaged the food; and at the end of the drive, each branch delivered the food to their local food bank.

Lena Matthews, CEO of Financial Resources FCU, says, “Financial Resources is committed to supporting our local food banks particularly in the current economy when many people are struggling financially and the need for help is greater than ever. A top priority for us is giving back to our communities.”

Chronic Knee Pain? You May Have a New Option

Posted on January 26, 2012 By

Dr. Manuel T. Banzon, a  board-certified orthopedic surgeon at Advanced Orthopedics and Sports Medicine Institute (AOSMI), Freehold and Monroe townships, performed a new procedure at CentraState Healthcare called Subchondroplasty™, a minimally invasive surgery for osteoarthritic knee pain caused by chronic bone marrow edema (BME).

Subchondroplasty is considered a new treatment for an overlooked cause of knee pain. This procedure is both joint-preserving and cost-effective for people suffering from chronic BME. The procedure delays the need for joint replacement and provides relief for patients with chronic knee pain because of BME. An MRI is needed to determine if BME is present.

At recent lectures Knee Arthritis – What are my Options?, sponsored by Victoria Healthcare, Matawan, and Human Motion Institute at Raritan Bay Medical Center, Dr. Banzon discussed operative and non-operative options in treating knee arthritis. Dr. Banzon’s talks are always free and open to the public.

For more information or to schedule lectures, contact  Jessica Wilcox 732-720-6414.

About Dr. Banzon: Dr. Banzon specializes in total joint replacement, arthroscopy, and fracture and trauma care. He serves as Director of Orthopedic Services at The Rehab Center atWedgwoodGardens. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery, and a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, the Monmouth County Medical Society, the New Jersey Medical Society, and the New Jersey Orthopedic Society.

Financial Resources Federal Credit Union Sponsors Children for the Holiday

Posted on January 24, 2012 By

The employees, board of directors, and supervisory committee of Financial Resources Federal Credit Union, with headquarters in Bridgewater, N.J., made sure that 30 local children, who have been separated from their families, had a gift to open this holiday. The children were identified by age and gender though CASA SHaW (Court Appointed Special Advocates of Somerset, Hunterdon and Warren counties), an agency that provides trained community volunteers to act as advocates in court for children who have been abused or neglected and are in the foster care system.

Receiving a gift during the holidays is a bright spot for these children who have been separated from their families and rely on the charity of others for any gifts that they get.  Financial Resources employees and members of the Credit Union’s Board of Directors and Supervisory Committee sponsored one or more children, and shopped and wrapped gifts for them based on a wish list.  CASA SHaW has been a charity supported by the Financial Resources Foundation, and this is the fourth consecutive holiday season that the credit union supported CASA SHaW’s holiday gift program.

Lena Matthews, CEO of Financial Resources Federal Credit Union, says, “Being in foster care is hard enough. We wanted to make the holidays as happy as possible for these children. We hope that our small contributions during the holidays made a difficult situation as good as possible for the children.”

For more information, contact Daniel Gontcharenko, Director of Marketing, at 908-253-6431 or visit http:///www.casashaw.org.

OHI Gives Kids a Smile — February Is National Children’s Dental Health Month

Posted on January 24, 2012 By

Several dental professionals at OHI (Ocean Health Initiatives, Inc.) are offering their services free of charge in recognition of the American Dental Association’s Give Kids a Smile program, now celebrating its 10th year. Children’s Dental Health Month focuses on raising awareness about the importance of dental care and provides oral health education to all children despite their economic status.

OHI is providing free dental screenings to children 12 and under, regardless of insurance, on Give Kids a Smile Day, Friday, February 3, 2012, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Dentists can see children at one of two locations: OHI’s Lakewood office, 101 Second Street or OHI’s Toms River office, 301 Lakehurst Road.

Because space is limited, appointments must be scheduled two weeks ahead of time. School nurses will provide a consent form and a medical history form, which children must bring to their appointment.  Call the OHI Call Center at 732-363-6655 to schedule an appointment.

The free screening includes a dental exam, oral healthcare instruction, fluoride treatments, and free dental hygiene materials, such as toothbrushes, floss and toothpaste.

Throughout the year, OHI offers dental cleanings and full checkups, including X-rays and other screening procedures for children and adults. Dentists are available at the Lakewood and Toms River sites Monday through Friday, beginning at 8:00 a.m.; and on the Mobile Medical Unit April through November.

UEZ Provides $20,000 Grant to Lakewood First Aid

Posted on January 23, 2012 By

Lakewood Mayor Menashe Miller and Patricia Komsa, executive director of Lakewood’s Urban Enterprise Zone (UEZ), presented a $20,000 grant toward the purchase of a new ambulance to Mordy Berger, captain of Lakewood First Aid Squad, and Ralph Lasry, president of the Lakewood First Aid Squad.

Komsa said, “This grant came from the UEZ Zone Assistance Fund, administered by the Lakewood Development Corporation (LDC). In the coming months, the UEZ expects to present a grant to Hatzolah as well.  Both organizations provide premier volunteer EMS services and serve as a backup to the Township’s EMS department.  They are EMT trained, and this is a great opportunity to support our municipal emergency medical infrastructure and services they provide for all residents, not just our businesses.

Lasry said, “We are finally able to purchase a new rig with this down payment.  Our squad does about 600 transports a year plus standbys and extrications. The ambulances currently in use are approximately twenty (20) years old and are no longer reliable.  Without this rig, we couldn’t continue. Our current ambulance is in the shop every other week.

Mayor Menashe Miller said, “The Lakewood public is served by three emergency medical services in our town. There is a paid squad and two volunteer squads. Lakewood Township stands behind its paid squads and volunteers, and we are proud that through our UEZ, administered under the LDC, we are able to assist them this year with funding towards a down payment toward a new ambulance. There is no price tag on a human life, and supporting our local emergency medical services is a number one priority.

The Urban Enterprise Zone Assistance Fund is to be used for the purpose of assisting qualified municipalities in which enterprise zones are designated in undertaking economic development projects, public improvements and in upgrading eligible municipal services in designated enterprise zones.
