Documentary about Roman Jews during the Nazi Occupation – Free Screening at Monmouth University
What was the experience of Roman Jews living in Nazi occupied Rome? The public is invited to a free screening of the film Oro Macht Frei (Gold Will Set You Free), Wednesday, November 5, at 7:30 p.m. in the Pollak Theatre, Monmouth University, 400 Cedar Avenue, West Long Branch, N.J.
Joel Markel, the founder and president of Preferred Home Health Care & Nursing Services, Eatontown, and the executive producer and founder of Ottimo Films, created Oro Macht Frei, a 70-minute documentary that tells the story of the Roman Jewish experience during the Nazi occupation of Rome, September 1943 through June 1944. The film seeks to create a personal reflection of the Holocaust in Italy by weaving testimony from Roman Jews who lived there with historical research of Susan Zuccotti, Alexander Stille, and Liliana Picciotto.
Following the screening, renowned historian Zuccotti and other scholars will be on hand for a question and answer session. Selected works from the Holocaust Suite, a set of lithographs by renowned printmaker, painter and humanist Jacob Landau; and Nazi artifacts from the private collection of David Meenan will also be on display in the lobby of Pollak Theatre.
Joel Markel, the son of a Hungarian Auschwitz survivor, wanted to honor the experience of his mother and the millions of victims of the Jewish genocide by contributing to the field of Holocaust memory. In 2004, during a tour of the Roman Ghetto, Markel first heard the story of Kappler’s Gold, an extortion plot perpetrated by Herbert Kappler, the head of the SS, who demanded 50 kilos of gold within 36 hours or 200 Jewish family heads would be deported. Markel immediately felt connected to this story because for generations his family had worked as jewelers.
The screening of Oro Macht Frei is sponsored by Monmouth University’s Center for the Arts with support from Preferred Home Health Care & Nursing Services, Monmouth University’s Department of History and Anthropology & The Jewish Cultural Studies Program, David Meenan, and the Jacob Landau Institute. For more information about this event visit www.monmouth.edu/arts or call 732.263.5715.

A Win-Win for Teeth, Troops, and Parents – Dr. Rotem Sponsoring Halloween Candy Buy-back Contest
How do you get kids to part with their Halloween candy stash, which will help save their teeth? Dr. Ron Rotem, a dentist at 355 Lakehurst Road, Toms River, is actively contributing with his annual Halloween Candy Buy-back Contest.
Dr. Rotem will buy back Halloween candy on Monday, November 3 and Tuesday, November 4 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. He will then donate the candy to our troops overseas.
Bring your Halloween candy to Dr. Rotem’s dental office, and he will give you $1.00 a pound up to 10 lbs. per family for candy collected from Halloween trick-or-treating. In addition, the child who brings in the most candy, by weight, will win a $50.00 gift card.
Individual classrooms, not schools, are also eligible to win a cash prize. One teacher from either a public or private school who collects the most Halloween candy, by weight, from students in his or her classroom and brings it to Dr. Rotem’s office will be eligible to win $400.00 to spend for his or her class.
This is the tenth year Dr. Rotem has sponsored his Halloween Buy-back Candy contest. Dr. Rotem said, “Obviously, the less candy kids eat, the better it is for them and their teeth. I started the candy buy-back program as an incentive for kids to donate some of their candy and at the same time make Halloween special for our overseas troops.”
Last year, Dr. Rotem collected hundreds of pounds of candy, which was shipped to our overseas troops through the American Recreational Military Service (ARMS). http://www.supportarms.org/

Throw Away Those Washboards! Laundry Time Will Lighten Your Laundry Load
How state-of-the art could a Laundromat be? Laundry Time, which opened recently at 137 Ocean Avenue (Route 88), Lakewood, N.J., brings its customers into a world of 48 modern front-loading stainless steel washing machines in a variety of sizes; 60 dryers, including six super large 80-pound pockets, and better conveniences than doing laundry at home or in the basement.
Those conveniences include six 60-inch LED televisions, free Wi-Fi, a detergent and fabric softener vending machine with a variety of sizes, a snack and soda machine, ample folding tables and laundry carts, comfortable seating, heating and air-conditioning, and two large restrooms that are ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) – accessible. The restrooms are designed with a “touchless” sink, soap dispenser, toilet and hand-dryer.
Instead of doing wash in the usual cramped laundry space, Laundry Time is spacious. It has high ceilings, white ceiling fans to keep air circulating, glass mosaic tiles in shades of blue and white that glisten in the sunlight, and gleaming rows of stainless steel washers and dryers.
“I spent two years doing research on how to create a Laundromat that would give customers a great experience. It’s airy, bright, and efficient; and it’s safe and secure,” said owner Abraham Shapiro, a Lakewood resident who is a realtor with ReMax on the Move and a paramedic with MONOC Mobile Health Services.
Built into the wall is a dollar-bill changer and two machines called the “X-Changer: Totally Automated Store.” These computerized machines allow customers to pay using credit cards, debit cards, or cash.
It also allows Shapiro to “micromanage” the Laundromat and offer various promotions, such as Seniors Day, Public Servant Appreciation Days, birthday bonuses, “Wash to Win” promotion, and a wide variety of other ongoing specials,” he said.
“The days of lugging around loose change, and putting 24 or 36 quarters in a washing machine are over,” he said. “That was crazy carrying around $8.00 worth of quarters for larger machines.”
He said he did a market analysis to ensure that the cost of doing laundry at Laundry Time is comparable to the other four or five Laundromats in the surrounding area. “We will be competitive and will also offer promotions,” he said.
Shapiro said the Laundry Time will be fully attended by employees who will “keep it meticulous and are available to assist customer needs, such as teaching the new card system, and how to operate the washers and dryers.” He said he will start with a total of five bi-lingual employees; and if needed, we will hire more employees to ensure the best customer experience. ”
Shapiro said he also may expand the business to include a “wash and fold service” or even a pickup and delivery service for blankets and comforters, and commercial accounts, such as linen services, nail salons, and restaurants.
Lakewood Committeeman Meir Lichtenstein said, “I know Abe to be a community-minded individual who volunteers his time as a paramedic. I’m particularly happy that he has chosen to invest his talent and resources into Lakewood.”
Harmony Bank, Jackson, N.J., financed the development of the project via a Small Business Administration (7a) Loan. “They were instrumental in helping turn my vision into a reality, and I would recommend them to entrepreneurs looking to open a small business.”
Laundry time is open seven days a week from 6:30 a.m. until 10:30 p.m., with the last wash at 9:00 p.m.
Local Families Whose Children Have Cancer Will Benefit from Smiles for Life Campaign
Forty-three families, members of Ocean of Love, whose children have cancer will benefit from the 2014 Smiles for Life Campaign, sponsored and supported each year by Dr. Ron Rotem, a Toms River dentist and member of the national Crown Council.
Gary Schiavone, an executive board member of Ocean of Love for more than 21 years, accepted $1650.00 on behalf of the nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization. Ocean of Love, Toms River, assists families with such nonmedical expenses as monthly gas cards that help defray the cost of driving to and from hospitals, parking fees at hospitals, mortgage payments, utilities, food, and even babysitting.
Schiavone said, “Dr. Rotem has been donating the fruits of his labor every year for as long as I can remember. I have only praise and thankfulness to him and his staff for the annual donation he makes to Ocean of Love.”
Each year, Dr. Rotem sets aside 100 percent of his fees for teeth whitening during the annual Smiles for Life Campaign, March 1 through June 30. Through the national Smiles for Life Campaign, Dr. Rotem has donated more than $50,000.00 to charities, especially Ocean of Love.
“What a wonderful opportunity to do something for yourself and, at the same time, help families who need support,” said Dr. Rotem. “It’s really a win-win for everyone.”
Since 1998, The Smiles for Life Foundation, the charitable arm of the Crown Council, has raised more than $30 million for children’s charities across North America because members of Crown Council dental practices have agreed to donate the cost of professional tooth whitening during the Smiles for Life campaign.
Dr. Rotem graduated from NYU College of Dentistry in 1991. His practice focuses on cosmetic dentistry and conscious sedation. Dr. Rotem belongs to the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. He is affiliated with the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, NJ Chapter of the Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, the Dental Organization of Conscious Sedation, the International College of Cranial Mandibular Orthopedics, the American Dental Association, the New Jersey Dental Association, Monmouth/Ocean Dental Society, and the Academy of General Dentistry. Dr. Rotem is an active member of the Crown Council. He is also a member of the Jersey Shore Business Network, Toms River.
